Trinity Report - The Hype and the Reality 17 Years, 10 Months ago
Fished the Trinity today. Previous reports have commented on how crowded the Trinity has been. Most have understated the reality. Wow. It is a weekday today, and there were a lot of people in a lot of areas of the river. I fished in the mid river above Weaverville this morning. While less crowded than Junction City downstream, there were still quite a few folks. The fish are either not in in this stretch, or they had a serious case of lock-jaw. I fished two of my favorite runs and did not touch a fish. Heard similar reports from others. Best I heard of was one fish in this area. After lunch I drove upstream to take a look at river restoration efforts. Lots of changes on some of the runs I frequent. I'll be curious to see how it impacts fishing. Stopped at the Steel Bridge access. Never been there. Didn't fish it, but there were quite a few trailers parked. Nice area. Headed West over the hill and down towards the North Fork. Slightly better reports there, but not red hot. Again, best I heard from anyone was one to a few fish. The hype of 20 fish days on the Trinity might be happening occasionally, but clearly is not the norm. There were a lot more folks in this area of the river. I'd suggest we establish a rock reservation system! I'm a little nervous what the weekend will bring tomorrow and Sunday.

I did finally stick a nice 6 pound 26" hen late this afternoon. Much to my surprise, it had Adipose! My first fish of the season, and it was a wild steelhead. Nice treat, and a great way to kick off the season. I released her and she promptly returned to the spot right where I hooked her.

I also stopped and paid my respects at Hud's Riffle. Pretty spot. Hud did great today in that run, all on Red Copper Johns and accompanied by a fine cigar. Here's to you partner!
