Russian River Steelhead 17 Years, 6 Months ago
I am wondering if anyone has had any success fishing steelies on the Russian this season? I have been told there are two to five pounders moving up-stream, but I haven't had any hook-ups in the few times I have been on the river in the past several weeks. This is my first season going after steelhead so I am not sure its to early to be expecting some action and/or I am not using correct techniques (I have been swinging buggers, comets, glo-balls, and bosses under a floating line in slow water/sinking line in faster riffle sections).

I'm partial to using sinking shooting heads with 20 pound Amnesia for running line...the shooting heads keep the fly (Boss, Comet, Chuahuhua, Flame, or any variation of these, including Micro Comets) at the depth where the fish are holding...I use either an intermediate or a #3 head most of the time but carry denser sinking heads and a floater too. The heads aren't for distance as much as keeping the fly at the depth...swing in the current then strip back, take a step down stream and repeat, repeat, repeat until you find fish.

I usually don't begin until mid December (after substantial rain that keeps the mouth open) and I fish places from the mouth to almost Ukiah.

Have fun,

Paul
