Stuck Rod????? 17 Years, 6 Months ago
This is the first time I've gotten my rod sections stuck together and could not get them apart. It's a Sage SLT and the handle and the first section WILL NOT come apart. I've tried behind the back, tug of war with a friend, hot water, cold water...it will not budge. I'm almost tempted to send it in to Sage! Any other remedies I might try?????

Last time this happened to me I took the rod to the local fly shop. The guys there showed their trick: two guys, each with one hand on either side of the stuck joint. They twisted and pulled in opposite directions to get the rod unstuck. The key, I think, is keeping the rod straight while pulling.

They then suggested I rub the rod joints with candle wax to make them less likely to stick. This has worked (so far!)

The usual problem is the difficulty of getting a good grip on the sections of blank. Obviously, you dont want to hold the guides while pulling & twisting lest they come loose.

Try using a piece of an old innertube, or putting on some garden gloves with those little rubber "griptions" on them to get a better hold of the rod & keep it from slipping in your hands.

Once apart, as George said, clean, then lube them lightly. The bad thing about wax (paraffin), is that it can hold grains of dirt that will scratch your blank. The BEST thing to use for this is a product by Trondak U-40 called (surprisingly enough!) "Ferrule Lube".

Read about it here:

Sit down on the edge of your dining room chair.
Legs together.
put rod behind knees with stuck ferrule at the imagined midpoint (where your legs come toether.)
grip rod with eah hand next to its corresponding knee.
move knees apart, not using your arm strength, just legs.

lube rod with parrafin once unstuck.
check paraffin often for dirt.

This worked for me... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
take a can of compressed air like you clean computers with.

Hold it upside down and spray the stuck joint. Being upside down the gas comes out really, really cold.

Pull stucked sections apart.

In the future, just rub the male end by your nose. A little nose oil with keep it from sticking and it's a lot easier then using parafin, etc.

I have placed ice or a small block of the reusable blue ice on the ferrule that would not give, esp. on a hot day after I put the rod together in the relative coolness of the morning. Lay it on a stable surface, give it a few minutes to cool (and contract?), and then try pulling apart again. Has worked for me several times.

1.lay out a pile of crushed ice or ice cubes.
2. lay the stuck ferrule on the pile.
3.Add more ice until the ferrule is covered.
4.Take remaining ice, place in large glass.
5. Fill glass to brim with beverage of choice. Consume.
6. When beverage is gone (first glass, dry hands, pull ferrule apart.
7. Add used ice to glass as necessary.
8. Repeat Steps 5 and 7 as necessary. Do not attempt 6 after first glass, unless you have a lifetime unconditional warranty.
