The usual problem is the difficulty of getting a good grip on the sections of blank. Obviously, you dont want to hold the guides while pulling & twisting lest they come loose.
Try using a piece of an old innertube, or putting on some garden gloves with those little rubber "griptions" on them to get a better hold of the rod & keep it from slipping in your hands.
Once apart, as George said, clean, then lube them lightly. The bad thing about wax (paraffin), is that it can hold grains of dirt that will scratch your blank. The BEST thing to use for this is a product by Trondak U-40 called (surprisingly enough!) "Ferrule Lube".
