American River Steelies? 17 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
Anybody know the scoop and care to share? I was thinking about heading up to the American around Goethe Park tomorrow. Heard if it rains the half pounders are turning on. Also heard now its not going to rain tomorrow. Also heard other reports that it is sloooow. Others still say the best in years?
Any info appreciated. I am in need of some willing fish. I have been working really hard last few trips just to convince a couple to play.

Hit the river around the area you mentioned. You won't need to get there any earlier than, oh, say 4:30-5.
The hatch varies from caddis to small (18) mayflies. Just check the water to see what's floating by, as the fish will be eating that but it might differ from whats flying. I generally need to switch flies every twenty minutes or so to match the changes.
Last night: a 20" hen and four 10-12 inchers. It's been like this for two months...though the 20" was the biggest i've caught so far. Big one was on a 18 Adams.
Where are you coming from?

Greetings all.
New to the board.
I'm coming to California and will have a couple of days this weekend to get and wet a line.
Was thinking about either the American river or Putah Creek.
I'd appreciate any suggestions, as well as the name of a good shop to pick up some fliesbetween Vacaville and Sacramento.
Many thanks for any input.
John

From the bay area. And given my son has PSATs tomorrow I need to head back there. If I didn't I would head up fish, and then continue right on afterward up to Tahoe. Supposed to be a beautiful weekend.
Oh well.
Maybe a valley drainage ditch?
