Josh as far as the Middle Fork Canyon you can drive down, 4wd only, right to the river at Cleghorn Bar and Stag Point. Both roads are heavy duty 4 wheel drive - don't bring the wife.

Josh,

If your wife is from Sligo, those roads won't scare her a bit. My paternal grandmother's family, the Fee family, were from Sligo, and didn't scare worth a tinker's dam!!

Thank you for this story. The 'Parking lot where Yeats is buried,' has given numerous images. I can just imagine the final rest place of one of Ireland's greatest poets, in a Walmart parking lot.

Keep the Yeats coming! A little culture on this board, will not cause any problems...and with Yeats, the culture still includes trout and booze...so we're ok.

I've been rather cold to Yeats myself...but just when I write him off, I find some thing like,
" We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams"

Hi everyone,

Sorry it has taken me so long to post my report and pictures, works been keeping me busy.

I ventured up to the NF of the Feather on Sunday morning. I decided to go fish below Poe. I got on the water about 11:00 AM. The wind was absolutely screaming. I spent the first 3 ½ hours fishing (or I should say trying to cast) in consistent winds of 10-20 mph with gusts at probably 30mph. To say the least casting was a real pain. At times I was literally waiting 2, 3, 4 minutes between casts waiting for the wind to calm long enough to get a cast or two out. I was considering going home to watch football but I really wanted to fish, so I decided to stay. During this time I fished a BWO, green stone fly, PMD, & caddis. At times I had a dropper on (copper john, bwo, stonefly). Between everything I threw I had minimal luck, I caught one small 8” and missed another 3-4 fish (one big one). Part of the reason I was missing them is the wind was grabbing my fly line and skating my bugs across the surface.

I sat down by one of my favorite holes at 2:30 to have some food, watch the water, and wait for the shadows to come on. I started fishing again around 3:00. Over the next 2 hours I caught five fish (and missed about 5, definitely a little rusty). I caught one real nice 16 ½” that was an absolute football, the other 4 were between 10 – 12”. There was a real nice hatch of BWO’s and what I think were Isonichia Velma’s that came off from 2:45 till about 4:00. I took some pictures but they didn’t come out well. Overall it turned into a nice afternoon fishing and the dogs and I had a good time.

So not the clearest pictures but I'm hoping someone can tell me definitively if this is a Isonichia Velma?

My dad’s coming up this weekend from Atascadero so I think we are probably going to give it another shot. I’ll hopefully get some better pictures since there will be 2 of us, so I will post another report.

Re:North Fork Feather 17 Years, 6 Months ago
OK so I just can't get my pictures to post, thanks for trying to help me Dawn. So I just put the URL's up so anyone that wants to see them can check them out.

So as far as the pictures I have tried posting them from Kodak Photo Share and Flickr.

I copy and paste the URL. Then highlight it and click the "Img" button. I have deleted the size = 150 and just left it alone to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

Well thanks in advance for any help. I probably won't have time to fix it this weekend and thought some of you might like to see the shots (maybe while sitting around at work on a Friday .

Oh yeah, please comment on the Isonichia Velma pictures, would love to know if that's what that is. Also is a #10 olive stonefly really what simulates a Isonichia Velma or is there something better. Although size and color are similar it seems weird to have a stonefly vs. mayfly. If I'm totally off on this please help me out, my entomology is pretty weak but I am trying to learn, got bugs of the underworld coming in the mail.

Well everyone have a good weekend, Dawn hopefully we'll see you up there.

OK after much screwing around I finally got it right the pictures are posted correctly 2 posts below.

Dawn,

Thanks for the help, that did it. You guys might want to consider posting that last step related to Flickr in the "How to post a new message" section but any ways thanks much. Thanks for the comment on the dogs, they are my permanent fishing companions.

Anyone have any idea on the bugs?

...looks like you got it figured out. I'm glad Dawn was able to help...pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Don't hesitate to drop me a note (or anyone else on the steering committee) if you have trouble posting.

I am glad I was able to help. Those are some great pics! Did you make it up again this weekend?

I saw the same bugs on Saturday that you posted pictures of. Unfortunately, I am only familiar with the nymph stage of Isonychias--I have never seen the adults. But they certainly were large mayflies. My dog kept snapping at 'em as they flitted by. The one I looked at up close was burgandy colored. I didn't get any pictures though.

Thanks for the suggestion for the FAQ. I will try to get something in there as soon as I can.

Re:North Fork Feather 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Dawn,

Yep got up to Pulga with my dad on Saturday about 1:30. Fished until dark and it was pretty slow down there. Never really got a good hatch going. Some sporadic BWO's and stone fly's hatching. I caught two small fish (7" and 9" and my dad caught a 10", at least we caught them all on the surface. I lost my biggest fish of the day, a 14". I saw the take perfect and he spit the fly real quick, so I checked my hook and I had snapped it off on one of those big bolders, urrrr.

Didn't see any of what I think are the isonichia's down at Pulga, probably should have jumped out of there and fished somewhere else but I always have a hard time leaving the water.

Did you have any success with the pikeminnow colleciton?

Thanks again for helping me get my picture posting straightened out.

Hey Josh,

I was just upstream of Pulga at Sandy Beach (that is where I saw the giant mayflies). It was pretty slow there too. I fished there most of the afternoon with only two hookups (both lost) and jumped up to Cresta Reservoir about 4:30. I did have success in catching pikeminnow there. There was a caddis hatch going on up there, but I caught my fish on garden hackle I was desperate at that point, and I didn't want to have another 500 mile round trip end with a skunk

At least you got some trout. I hate it when I lose a fish because of a broken hook!
