RB-----I concur, feeling that David is doing a fabulous job for TU and the local fisheries. I do not see, nor did I intend, to imply in my post that I questioned his dedication and activity in this area. Everything that I see him doing is commedable.

Declining sagebrush, interesting observation....

Per your observation of declining fisheries in California:

How about California's human population increases over the last 20-40 years (...hence more impact) and static fishery resources & habitat? Something has to give.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

NOW FOR THE SPAM!!

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

Hi Frank-
Saw you in the rear view mirror at Granite Flat yesterday (Lisa and I were running the Sagehen project) but didn't have time to chat. You STILL look like a baby. When are you going to start getting fat and bald like the rest of us?

If TTFF joins TU do not expect to see any material changes. Unless you get a glamor project it is unlikely you will receive direct financial or legal assistance. There is clout in numbers and a large loud TU chapter is more apt to get national billing than a scattering of wallflowers. I'd seriously consider affiliating with Reno (or Sac) rather than just becoming another "club". You are all fishing the same waters and have basically the same concerns. Tightly focus on one or two specific and strategic issues.

TU is VERY dependent on who is in charge at the state level. TU was for many years a non-event until Steve Trafton came on board and shook things up. When he left it started spinning its wheels again (as far as local chapters). The "new" David is interested in the Tahoe/Truckee arena so perhaps you will find more than just moral support.

TU does LOTS of non-glam behind the scenes stuff. I strongly support them for their national level politicing - just don't expect much at the local level, but be pleasantly surprised if you do get some assistance.

Ralph---
I agree Steve Trafton did boost the level a bit. I am a former member,
and worked in Souther California on several issues and projects (Little Kern Golden Habitat and Southern Cal Steelhead issues).
I ended up resigning from the board when the Orange County Chapter was going to accept sponsorship from Western States Petroleum.
It was enough for a lefty like me to willfully work with essentially a Republican Chapter (some of them are still my favorite fishing friends), but going along with Green Washing for a polluting corporation pushed me over the top.
They have done valuable work, and approach issues from a perspective others would not.

Hey Carpster,

Our local chapter of TU is also the fly club in Tucson; they are one and the same. The club's name is the Old Pueblo Trout Unlimited (Old Pueblo is the fond nomiker that locals have hung onto the town of Tucson).

The club sponsors outings, including many where they both fish and work on stream habitat, killing crayfish and improving Apache Trout streams. We've also got a species of trout in AZ and NM called the Gila Trout, which the feds have thoughtlessly downlisted from "endangered" to "threatened", and now they can be fished (C & R) in some areas. TU has really opposed this stupidity.

I haven't read this thread yet, so that's all I'll contribute, but since the TU chapter is also a club, by joining TU I'm automatically a club member, and receive info every month. Because Tucson is 85 miles from me, I basically participate in my local club.

Email me on the local steelie conditions. If you can convince me, I might bless you with my presence on your stream. Otherwise, I'm heading north a week from now.

Ralph...Geez, thanks for the compliments! You just saw my full head of hair, my torso was out of view....

Your input is important, after all you are a founding member of the TTFFers. Thank for the sage advice as to what to anticipate and not anticipate relative to TU chapter status. I'm leaning towards no inclusion and remaining an independent FFF group. I'm viewing that as remaining and acting independently; more grass-roots oriented.

As for Trafton, met him, liked him, had several conversations with him, he shook some branches, left and moved-on to greener pastures. I'd like to see some of these operatives (right word?)stay put for awhile. It makes me wonder if they're merely focused on climbing a corporate ladder for better jobs and padding their resumes.

I'm old school, progressively getting more set in my thinking. Over the years I've viewed a lot the political gamesmanship and overloaded egoes during angler-fishery-conservation skirmishes. Unfortunately I'm becoming more skeptical of some of the conservation-groups' people who come, go and move-on. You know, you've seen it, you're being polite....that's good.

Hightreker----you're abrupt resignation from your ex-TU chapter is understandable.

Re:Trout Unlimited 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Frank,

I am the President of the Amador Flyfishers, a small club (~50) that meets in Jackson CA. I am a member of FFF, TU and I believe still of CT as well. I have been posting on NCFFB on and off for a while now. As I stated earlier I am trying to help the Sac-Sierra Chapter get their website together and I help out in whatever other ways I can.

I am heading up to Redding for the Conclave because there is another program that I really wanted to talk to the other FF Club Presidents about. It is called Project Healing Waters. I also need to set up speakers for our club meetings in 2008. I have volunteered in the NCCFFF Booth at San Mateo before as well. That was before I moved up here to the mountains.

I have mixed feelings regarding both TU and FFF. Both organizations really like to send out their political messages, but neither do that great of a job in helping FF clubs get projects started, provide speakers, pass on local information etc... Check the TU California Website. It does not look as if it has been updated with new content in quite some time. Maybe they just need more volunteer help, I am not sure.

I have questioned my belonging to all three organizations because of the constant pandering for funds. I realize that these organizations need money to survive, but at times it can seem really excessive. Sometimes I start wondering how much money they could save if they didn't send out all the mailings?

I also like to think for myself. I do not appreciate any organization to tell me how to vote, whether it be my union, or any other organization. I prefer them to tell me both sides of the issue, not just use the part of the information that proves they are correct and leave out the details that do not prove their point.

I would recommend that you remain an independent club and affiliate, like Ralph stated, with a chapter that is already out there. Then you can donate funds and/or time and materials to the projects that interest your organization and provide you with tangible benefits.

In speaking with Barbara this evening she mentioned that the Tahoe Chapter is not active. If you REALLY want to do a lot of work rekindling the chapter you could contact TU National and ask them. Prior to doing that I would talk to Barbara regarding the amount of work it has taken in the last year to restart the Sac-Sierra (Formerly the Sierra) Chapter. If you would like contact information send me a PM and I will provide Barbara's contact information. They do not like having their phone number on the internet for obvious reasons. You could also call me since my phone number is listed as the contact number for the Amador Flyfishers.

I would also like to discuss a club presentation with you if you are interested.

"I do!", said the Duke, when the sun sank low, "Get out!! It's time to fish"
"Come in", cried the king with a trout, trout, trout.
"Tonight, we fish in the tub!"
