Trout Unlimited 17 Years, 7 Months ago
I was wondering if any other posters out there belong to TU? If so, do you actively participate in your local chapter and/or is your chapter active?

I've been a member of TU for the past 4 years and have not had a single piece of corresponadance from the local chapter. I have first hand knowledge of their activities from my continued involvment with one of their projects on the lower Russian River...however, I have never heard anything directly from the chapter, nor are there chapter meetings, newsletters, etc. I'm really re-thinking my membership because of it. I just don't see the need being the work we do with/for them. If the money is an issue, I can donate directly to the project and not have it funnel back to the local chapter/projects that are important to me through a national network.

What have others experience/thoughts been on Trout Unlimited?

Regards,
Rick

I just got a free membership. I was a member once before too. Don't see much other than at the national level.

But I did see something about the local chapter (Truckee) hiring some young kid who is doing good things and trying to get everyone involved.

In the end its a big organziation - so lots of overhead. But they do some good work. But the old adage, act locally is the best! What I love is to pick up trash along the river as I fish. It just makes things better for everyone.

There's a new chapter in Sac, and I've been meaning to get to a meeting but haven't thus far. Glad there is now a local chapter and hope they get on some projects.

Amen. Picking up trash when ever I fish is paramount.

Most times, I come home w/more beer cans than fish I've hooked....I consider that a great day :teeth

Just seems like the thing to do

I can't really speak to the TU view on things, but I know that FOR dropped local chapters... it cost us a lot more to run the chapters than we got out of it and it really fragmented our efforts. I'd bet that the attendance at TU meetings is a far cry from what they once were and that they are putting more focus on their national efforts and more directed conservation work... that's all a guess... but it's an educated guess.

I've belonged to TU for years. My only gauge is what I see in their quarterly Trout magazine and their direct mailers. They're definitely doing lots of conservation work and appear to target certain local issues.

I was very impressed with their winter 2007 consumer's guide to why eating wild Pacific salmon was better than farmed Atlantic salmon, not only for your health but also for the environment. I wish they would make PDFs of this article available to anyone to download, instead of requiring that you had to be a TU member to read it. (Marketing 101...many people would end up joining any way after reading the reprint.) That's something that a national org probably has more resources to accomplish than a local org, but I wish they had taken this a bit further.

So Rick, I can see why you're questioning the value of your membership in terms of local impact. I guess I've always felt there's value to a national org and as long as the membership fee is in the reasonable range, I'll continue to pay it.

To All,

I have volunteered my services to help the Sac-Sierra TU Chapter get their website in order, and have agreed to help maintain it for them.

I would like to know if you would like to see announcements on the board regarding conservation projects & meeting announcements or not. I can get the information and post it on the board as soon as I receive it. Would you guys like it linked from the website or copied and pasted into a post here???

As for a meeting John, Wednesday night is the board meeting at SMUD Headquarters. I will be stopping in there for the board meeting before heading out that night for Redding for the NCCFFF Conclave.

They also have a booth at the Salmon Festival if you make it by there today you can talk to some of the volunteers, maybe even catch Barbara Bania there, she is the President of the chapter.

Let me know,

Dustin

...a TU conumdrum 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Interesting & timely thread here. Being the current Conservation Chair of the local fly fishing group; Tahoe-Truckee Fly Fishers (www.ttff.net); I'd like some board input as to the pros & cons of the TTFF becoming a TU chapter. Some comments have already been made. Are there any others that may be pertinent?

David Lass is a northern California regional rep. I personally like him and he seems dedicated. California Fly Fisher did a feature on him a few issues ago. He has been very active in the Truckee area; fly fishing with us, attending meetings (both the club's & recently a Truckee River Watershed Council on a geomorphic assessment of the Perazzo Meadows) & being a "lead" in today's Truckee River Day's habitat restoration project on Prosser Creek (new gravel for spawning)...to mention some of his visible activity.

My conundrum is whether the TTFF should be a TU chapter
. My initial take when we spoke was, "done". Then I realized that TU (and CT?) represents all anglers, not just fly and hardware anglers; the focus being restoration and preservation of self-sustaining, wild populations of trout...not the methods. I guess I've been naive all these years, thinking TU (...again ?CT?) represented lure or fly anglers...never thought about bait anglers.

    Admittedly, my bias
is that:

1-bait-anglers have a higher propensity to harvest wild trout and, everything I've read (and I did a lot of it to prepare for a recent CA F&G Commission meeting in spring of this year) or heard.

2-bait-hooked fish have an undisputible, higher mortality rate upon release.

...hence the conumdrum.

Thanks in advance.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

NOW FOR THE SPAM!!

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

Frank,

The TU California website lists a TU Chapter for Tahoe already.
http://www.../council-chapters-gi.htm

Were you thinking that by donating, or having all the club members as TU members, that would be what you considered a "chapter?" Might I have misinterpreted your meaning? There is no reason that your club couldn't donate funds and/or time to the local chapter.

Re:...a TU conumdrum 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Frank,
Your conundrum is understandable.

I like to look at the problem from "What If?" It sucks to take bulldozers and destroy forests to build a fire break. But that cost is insignificant to what we lose if we don't stop the fire.

Personally I think fishing continues to decline around California. I don't know why. But the fish are not there in the numbers and size they were even 1o years ago. There are success stories to be sure, but I think overall we are losing ground.

Even the subtle things - like yesterday on the LT in the meadow section - where has all the sagebrush gone? And what does it mean? More runoff, ecological imbalance???

From an outsider's perspective I think that young kid (Lass) is doing a good job. Can you become a TU chapter, then later decide to "unafiliate" if its not working out?

Re:Trout Unlimited 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Dustin----I'm aware that there is a TU chapter in south Tahoe as well one in Graeagle, north of Truckee. I am specifically asking if the local, north Tahoe fly fishing club, Tahoe-Truckee Fly Fishers should become a "TU chapter". Whatever that designation means (anyone with such a clarification?)is why I'm requesting pro & con comments.

I've heard your name recently (within the last 3-4 years) and I'm not sure what your executive capacity is with the NCCFFF. Are you the president or conservation chair? If either, more especially the latter...what advice and/or opinion do you proffer?

Receiving opinions and advice is the intent of why I initiated this thread. I'd like to advise the TTFF of my informed opinion on this matter, after I've reviewed the input dicussed from this board. Then the TTFF board of directors can decide what they want to do.
