that's a great question. My guess is that it won't have much of an effect on the hatches other than they might interpret it as cloud cover. However, if it's very smoky on the river, it will probably effect how the bugs react once they are out of the water. If you're thinking of fishing this weekend i would shoot for a river tucked deeper into the canyon. (as opposed to the stan at knights ferry) it will be less smokey.
P.S. there is a possibility that everything i've just said is completely wrong.

It is real bad here 18 Years, 1 Month ago

I had to drive with my headlights on yesterday at 7pm, no sun, there still aren't any shadows from the sun.
We have taken preventative measures:
Does this work as a gas mask?

I'm glad to see that preventative measures are available.

Now if this was the Southern califofnia Fly Fishing Board this kind of thing would be a daily event. No only that but it would be automobile exaust rather then forrest fire smoke we'd be breathing.
I guess that's another good reason for living in Nor Cal.

The smoke must be real thick up there in Oroville. I heard a rumor the whole county is on fire.
I wanted to comment to Jdec before I hijacked his thread, years ago I was fishing the Deschutes, it was slow, the next day there was a fire, the smoke from the fire blocked out the sun, kinda high haze with orange "smoggy" glow, that next smoky day the bug hatch was huge, the bite turned on, and we hammered the fish. It could have been moon phase, barometer, overcast from the smoke or a combination of all of them. If I had my way, I would prefer it with out the smoke.

My fishing days have been very limited, but I was thinking it might have an effect on the hatches. The smoke has caused the temps to come up slower during the morning. It seems like that perfect temperature time has been expanded by at least a hour.
It was pretty clear when I got up this morning but it setteled in again around 10:00am. It's still not as bad as last week. Cough!Cough!

OK Mr. Language Person; if we're going to start getting picky around here, it would be "I empathize with folks too" or "I have empathy for folks too"

Stretch,
Point taken (by you), given (by me)...however, the word, empathize, being an intermediate verb and as used in my sentence is a predicate verb which is allowed to provide a link between the subject and the predicate of the sentence (even if the predicate is a verb that expresses a state of being), or if the predicate verb is conjoined with a prepositional phrase...empathy on the other hand, is a noun and requires a verb for linkage as used in your example.
In any event, I appreciate your input and can only hope that the author of the quote that was reproduced by Troutnut, to which I referenced in italics, can obtain a modicum of knowedge from this exchange.
Petri Heil,
Paul
