Well, Monday I went to the Silver Fork to catch little, stupid fish. Today I needed more of a challenge, so I went up to Truckee to try the LT and my bete noir, the Main Truckee.
Life is Good. The Gods Smiled. Karma descended upon me.
I got to the LT around noon and was greeted by four gentlemen (geezers?) from Modesto. They had been skunked in the meadow section and were leaving to enjoy lunch and a few brews. They reported no hatches, no rises, no nothing.
Being the eternal optimist, and up to the challenge, I set out across the meadow to some of my favorite holes and runs. Since there were no rises, I tried a PT nymph and a red zebra midge and was immediately rewarded with a 14"er on the PT. For the next hour or so there was nothing, so I thought, "what might tempt these guys to the surface?" I tied on a two fly rig with an EC Caddis and, since the wind was kicking up, an ant trailing.
I had always heard guys claim to have caught a 19"er here, but I thought, "yeah right." Well, I caught HIM on the ant in fairly skinny water. He was not interested in seeing my net, but I finally prevailed. Then another, and another, on the ant, both in the 15" to 17" range. Then a 14"er on the EC Caddis. Never did see any hatches. It's always amazed me how such a small stream can hold such large fish. What a treasure.
That was enough fun, so I decided to try something really challenging--like fish the main T. I've had a pretty sorry history of futility there, so I thought I probably deserved to be humbled after the LT successes. I've been told (here) that there are good caddis hatches just before dark. But you fish when you can. Got there about 4:00 to be greeted by multiple rise forms. I still had on the EC and the ant, so I flipped them out, and on the second cast hooked and landed a 12"er on the EC. Then another one. And yet another, this time on the ant. And several missed grabs or refusals. Then it shut down--nothing. So I drove home, contented. My best day ever on those two streams.
Lots of smoke, even in the Truckee area. Hope all are safe in the affected areas. Good news about Janet and Dave.
Cheers,
El Rey
