Mice in My Fly Tying Stuff! 18 Years, 2 Months ago
I felt like the Pied Piper this afternoon. Tied up a bunch of Foam Gurgler Mice. My wife shrieked and ran out of the room!

Sweet looking little critters Phil. They look like they might come in handy to throw across a powerhouse tailrace on a late summer evening... Got any extras?

Hey Phil,

I was out on the lower American Friday evening for a quick little float in my kayak looking for stripers and wish I would have had one of those little guys to toss . I saw one fish come to the surface but couldnt entice anything to hit my pencil popper I was tossing. I typically use the pencil popper with my casting rod while floating to try to find a school of fish and then switch over to the fly rod. It was good to just get out anyway.

Best Wishes,
Bill

The American River just above watt avenue

Pretty stretch of water

This is my searching casting rod with a big pencil popper. Didnt find anything and I never even tossed any flys .

Best Wishes to all!

Bill

I know some weedbeds that have a bunch of bass swimming under them that love mouse burgers.

Phil,
What material do you use for the mouse's body?

Great looking imitations...I've been led to believe that an all white version may work well in the upper section of the Truckee for trout.

This pattern was featured as a Fly of the Month over on Fly Anglers Online. Pretty simple tie, with several unique steps. The over body is Furry Foam. I substituted 2 layers of 2 mm tan closed cell foam for the under layer/gurgler portion of the fly. Was much easier than using 3 mm foam and cutting it with a razor blade as shown in the article. I also used Pearlescent Estaz for the body, rather than the chennile in the article, as I couldn't find the stuff the author tied this pattern with. These are destined for Kamchatka in July for a fellow out of Georgia. He was looking for a waking pattern, and these appeared to fit the bill.

Here's a link to the article: http://www...ing/fotw2/011005fotw.php
