On the Holiday Monday I took my wife, Ann, to try out her brand new dougp-built rod. (Most of you know the story of the rod and Pappy's contribution, I think.)
We went to one of those smaller tailwaters east of Lodi where it's easy to wade, and there are lots of 8" to 10" smolts. Her casting is improving--as long as I don't give advice--and the rod does cast beautifully, but alas, she couldn't catch anything. A few missed strikes were enough of a thrill. I did manage to catch a few as she rested. Lots of picnicing families and dogs in the water didn't improve the fishing. It's back to midweek fishing.
We will most likely be at the Bash, though Ann is having back problems as a result of chemo and radiation. If she comes we will definitely fish that little creek south of the campground where small fish are easy to catch. Hat Creek might be a little intimidating for her.
Anyhow, hope to see you all at the Bash--less than 2 weeks away.
Cheers,
El Rey
