Just another 5 star read by Gierach? I say yes! His words are timeless for those of us that have traveled similar roads. When I get weighted down by my life's 'serious endeavors', A bit of Gierach puts me in a good place. Do yourself a favor check out a little Fool's Paradise. I'd reccomend that you read Jonah Goldberg'sliberal facism, as well as Mark Styn's America Alone beforehand.

(I have recieved no compensation for this reccomendation) I did meet John at a sportsman show a few years ago, but I was too star struck to say much. I floundered around and said two words: Camp Coffee. He shot me a thumbs up and I returned it and that was that.

Thanks for the recommendation Dave. I'll have to give Fool's Paradise a try. Gierach is a very good author and does have a way of putting things in perspective!

I liked his description of fly fishing for steelhead:
"day after day, you're casting a fly that doesn't look like anything to fish that aren't hungry and may not even be there"

I agree, if you are going to read America Alone, you need to save Fool's Paradise as the antidote.

My last Gierach read was "At The Grave Of The Unknown Fisherman". I had my brother pick it up for me when I was bed bound with a bad back - Gierach does tend to put you in a good place. I was reminded of this nearby grave site when I saw the title...No last name, dates, accomplishments - just all that needed to be said "Smithy the Fisherman".

I've been meaning to pick up a copy of Fool's Paradise for my next back bout - thanks for the reminder.

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

Look at the size of that tree over the grave! Does that mean most fishermen are full of $hit and make good fertilizer?

My favorite thing about fishing isn't the catching, but just being there - Beerfly

My signed copy came in the mail while I was on the last fishing trip(read Shad Report).
Just started to read it last night I think I have every book of his.
Good reading, RAS
