hey - have a blast - am actually in your neck of the woods right now - fished a "creek" by my lonesome today - great fun - friday and saturday with bryan - back home saturday night in time for mom's day with wendy - hope you have a wonderful time in paradise - i'll see you this summer - am back up in july...

Kauai Report, part II 18 Years, 3 Months ago

Went out with a guide (Rob) today with my dad. Very different approach to the same water I've been fishing. Very slow, very methodical... not a lot of casting. I cast to one bone, which I only saw very briefly as it was leaving the area. Did catch two blue trevalle, which, I have to say, are maybe the most beautiful fish I have had to hand to date. Really... they are BEAUTIFUL.
Rob was a good guide... only so much you can do. I had a really hard time spotting the fish, which I guess is 90% of the game in flats fishing.
I have some pics, I'll post when I get back.

Thanks for the heads up on the Three Easy Steps... that's good news that our Comms Director.
I felt bad for Rob, he was doing all he could do to get us into fish... but the tide stayed low a long time and that kept the fish off the flats... the wind was blowing (not sure it ever stops on Kauai) hard and that screwed up a couple of opportunities. I pulled the fly out of a fish's mouth once (luckily, not a bone) and fluffed the one bone opportunity. My dad had a tough time with the wind and only had one really good shot at some of the Trevalle and they spooked. Dad got one fish, a Trumpet Fish, but that was it. Five hours of walking the flats.
If it weren't for Rob, I would not have seen any of those fish... a salt water guide's eyes must be VERY sharp.
Oh well... it is a family trip anyway and the fam is all here and we are enjoying it here. The house is right across from the beach and it has been a great place for little Anna to play in the water... no waves here. A good trip.

Do you live down in Santa Cruz? That's where I grew up (technically Ben Lomond - in the mountains above Santa Cruz - where the San Lorenzo flows).
Do you know if Dick (Richard) Stipes is still part of the Santa Cruz FF club? I worked for Dick for a few years before college. He is a great man! If you know him/see him tell him Josh Conner said "Hi".

I actually live in pacific grove, on the monterey peninsula. I am a member of the Santa Cruz Club and the Monterey Peninsula Fly Casters, both.
I suspect that Richard Stipes is still a member, because Cecilia Stipes is the Fish Master for a couple of fishing trips. I'll try to make it a point in June to tell him (or her) that you said hello.

As far as I'm concerned Tunnels Beach is the best snorkeling on the island. That's where I saw the HUGE sea turtles. I've spent about 6 months there collectively on vacation since 1990 and tried everywhere.

If you get the chance, drive to the end of the road to Ke'e Beach and take the trail to Hanakapa'i Beach. It's about 1-1/2 miles of not too difficult trail. Nice beach and you may even want to try out the fishing. I never got to try the fishing there so I don't know how good it is.

Well, what a day... this AM I went out right in front of the place we are staying at Anini. Off the bat I spooked a school of smaller Blue Trevalle... at least I saw some fish. Later on, as I was watching this little depression in the coral I saw a wave coming my direction, against all the other waves. Then I saw two HUGE Blue Trevalle... got a couple casts in and they jammed... man those things move fast. I stayed out another hour and saw nothing... headed in... as I got toward the beach I spooked a bone... my first really good view of a bone... it was MASSIVE... a 20 pounder for sure. No cast. Then I saw a second moving off the coral flat not moving too fast. I got a cast in, but it didn't look at it and took off. In the next 10 minutes I saw FIVE more bones... got casts in to all of them, had one or two take a look and pretty much spooked the rest. My heart was beating out of my chest and my fingers were shaking... man... that is some crazy fishing.
This evening I went out and again saw the two big Blue Trevalle, casts but no grabs. Standing in the same spot (because it was the only place I could see into the water with the sun in front of me and the wind behind me) I saw a HUGE Dolphin Fish cruise by... about 4 feet long and radiating blue neon. I cast to the thing, but it could care less... probably a good thing I didn't hook it... it would have probably broken something gear related.
So, that is it... two fish caught (blue trevalle), 7 bones seen, 4 giant Blue Trevalle seen and one massive Dolphin Fish seen... and some smaller Trevalle... basically, I got my a$$ handed to me but it was a whole new way of fishing... a very different approach to what I'm used to and pretty exciting despite the number of casts I put in being = to about an hour of trout fishing.
I'll get some pics up mid-week. I'm on an FOR trip as soon as I get back and will be off-line for a few days.

Sorry it took me so long to post back to you, work always seems to be getting in the way of fishing and fishing related matters.
I love Pacific Grove my grandparents owned a house there for years, it's a beautiful place, great place to retire.
Cecilia is Dick's wife, I'm glad she has gotten into fly fishing. Well if you see or meet Dick tell him I said "hi", he's a great guy.
Anyway Ed it seems like maybe we're destined to meet at some point, we have some similar history.
You live in Pacific Grove - my grandparents lived in PG.
You belong to the SC Flyfishers and so does the best boss I've ever had.
And I believe you said your grandma (I believe that is what you said) is from County Sligo Ireland and my wife grew up in County Slio, all her family are from there, and we got married there.
I don't know seems kind of spooky  . Just kidding.

Totally agree, snorkeling at Tunnels is unbelievable. I actually was with more turtles at Ke'e but Tunnels is spectacular. God I miss Kauai.
