Kauai - Fly fishing - May 18 Years, 3 Months ago
so... the fam is headed to Kauai in early May for my folks' 40th wedding anniversary. My dad and I are set to go bone fishing with a guide one day... bone fishing on Kauai??? I found two guides with websites... seems to be growing in popularity. Now, it would be great to get into a bone, but really, it would be great to catch anything beyond a cold in the salt... anyone have any pointers on fishing the Garden Island? There has been a bit written on fishing Oahu, but I'm not going to be there... and while I've picked up some of the advice on gear and tactics, I'd love any advice on beaches to try or anything specific to Kauai.

I'm going to be brining two rods, a 7 and 9 wt. The 9 wt. is a bit long, 10 feet, but you go fishing with the rods you have, not the rods you want to have. Right now I just have a floating and sink tip line for the 9, while my 7 wt. has a tropical intermediate clear sink that I've used off the beach in Nuevo Vallarta.

Any advice appreciated.

Bjorn,

If harry in Hawaii doesn't see this and respond (and I bet he'll respond if he sees it,) drop him an e-mail or a PM. Not sure he's done Kaui, but I'll bet he has data.

The Kauai Marriott in Lihue has a good koi population in the waters on their grounds, though I doubt you are looking for that epic 'pacific island carp adventure' not to mention being removed from the premises. I was just there in January and thought about it each time I walked through the hotel.

The waves and sand always take place of fishing when I go to Kauai, but below is a URL that contains some info on trout fishing in a stream on the island. Lots of effort to get there, a multi-day trip, so it probably won't apply in your scenario but is something I hope to look into during future trips there.

Kauai bash anyone?

I saw quite a few links regarding freshwater options for Kauai, so more applicable info to your inquiry is out there. A few years ago I was on a kayak/hike on some private plantantion land and was a little surprised to see bass in the small creek among the tree roots in the water and swimming around my kayak.

I will add a fly rod to the next trip there. Good luck!

Thanks. I've seen that article before... I think it might be a secret ploy by PETA to try and kill off fly fishing anglers. I've also seen those Koy... they are indeed impressive. That has to be one of the coolest hotels ever... love the entrance.

I've been pretty lucky at finding a bunch of info since my post (thanks to those that have sent me emails and messages) and it has me pretty excited about the trip, really. I'll be taking my 7 and 9 wts and the beach we are staying at seems to be the main place to search for bones. It sounds like 1-2 a day is a big day... but I'll cast to anything... even snorklers...

I also gather that the bottom has more coral and so you need stouter leaders.

This page is about fly fishing in HI in general... Oahu I think, but still interesting and a good starting point...
