Well, I had predicted someone would die at bridge construction, but I was thinking Cypress and not Anderson... I have not seen that construction project there. Is it as sketchy as the one up at Cypress? Any other insights into why this happened?

We all seem to get a little bit relaxed about safety on a river as big, broad and flat as the Lower Sac, forgetting the absolute power of all that water heading to the ocean. I don't know the last time I wore a PFD on the Lower Sac... just might have to change that.

What's the scenario for rescuing a capsized drift boat? Do drift boaters not wear PFD's because they suppose the chance of a capsize is so slim?

Since I have a very hard time imagining rescuing a kayak without a PFD, and a very easy time imagining it capsizing, I ALWAYS wear a PFD. Ditto for rafts.

Here's Pit Boss' recommendation: if you think it looks stupid or sissy wearying a PFD, do what I do and attach a Rambo-ish looking river knife to the front, handle down. The knife will look cool and might even someday have a chance to save your life, though PFD's chances of doing so are much better.

Word is that he might have had a heart attack while trying to swim to shore. A buddy helped with CPR on him, and he had a PFD, but for some reason didn't pull the cord.

My condolences go out to his friends and family. Terrible thing.
