My dad never fished with an indicator when I was growing up either. He always used a dry line, small shot and short leader or a wet line and short leader. He watched the end of his line and felt change. I learned, but kinda like when cassettes replaced 45 and 33 1/3 records and I was able to get rid of the phonograph and several miles of extension cord in my truck & replace them with a tape deck . . . I evolved too.
