The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on problems created by the Cypress Bridge construction project. I'm planning to drift the Sac on Saturday in a two man pontoon. I will take a look at the area before launching but I'm curious to know what side of the river I should setup on before the narrow shoot. Are there any other obstacles I should know about that were not there a year ago?

Saturday - Lower Sac
Sunday - Yuba

Talked to a friend last night who drifted it last week. He says it is extremely dicey, unless you really have your stuff together, and he would not recommend that anyone who does not row a LOT even try it. Twenty feet wide, gotta really get oars in tight to be safe, but you need a direction change in the middle of the squueze, so you cannot keep them in all the time.

I don't know how experienced you or your buddy are, but be very careful, or Painless is what it is apt not to be!!

Dave, The place they want you to go through is on River Right and is marked. How dicey it is depends on what the flows are and how much experience you have. I went through a few weeks back at 3,600 and it wasn't too bad, even though I wasn't on the oars... still, it wouldn't take much for things to go horribly, horribly wrong there. It is a place custom made for a wrap... lots of metal poles pounded into the river bottom... each one is about 3 or 4 feet wide. Someone is going to die there at some point.

If you have the option, the next float down doesn't have any of those issues and still has plenty of trout.

With my Father-in-Law on his first ever fly fishing trip and Mike Caranci of the Fly Shop. And Bjorn is right, there are plenty of fish on that float, especially now. They weren't keyed in on anything specific, and we hooked up on quite a few different patterns: micro spawn, rubberlegs, micro may, Gordon Prince, Fox's Poopah, march brown nymph, big AP....everything seemed to work, though nothing in particular.

The "Squeeze" is not to bad at 3,500cfs, but the flows are now up to nearly 6,000cfs and Redding City have announced that it will be CLOSED at 7,000cfs and above. That means the Posse to Bonneyview drift will be out for most of the summer I imagine. Of course you will still be able to put in at Bonneyview and use one of the take-outs downstream.
All this is due to absurd planning be the City of Redding, what was the city engineer thinking?
