CA Rivers Festival - Recap 18 Years, 4 Months ago
On Saturday I was working at the California Rivers Festival at the Sacramento Waldorf School. It was a good time with hundreds and hundreds of folks coming through. The Granite Bay Fly Casters were there, as well as two really exceptional fishing/fish/river photographers (Andy Mauer and Jeff Bright). There were booths from all sorts of river and environmenal nonprofits and a swap meet mostly for rafting and kayaking gear. I and another FOR staffer bought oars and all the required bits for a rowing/fishing frame that was recently donated to FOR... three oars for $125... hard to beat.

Keep an eye on this for next year. It really was a fun event.

Bjorn

(PS - I broke my worst fishing streak in a decade last Friday... little trip to the South Fork and then fished the Middle Fork on Sunday... both trips turning up fish, although not many.)

Seems like there is lots of support for pulse flows, good for non-profits that cater to the whitewater enthusiasts' community.

Oh please... Friends of the River is not an organization that advocates for pulse flows. We are river-centric, not rafting-centric. The organization you are thinking of is American Whitewater. You keep making statments like that and you are just plain wrong. Good grief man, give it a rest.

When we are in a relicensing negotiation we have to deal with all of the groups that come to the table. We don't get to say "this is the best, so this is what the deal will be". We do not have conditioning authority. Sometimes there are compromises we have to make due to the demands of the other user groups. These negotiations happen in the real world, not the ideal world.

Friends of the River has been involved in the designation of just about every piece of Wild & Scenic water in California. We work to mitigate for the adverse impacts of dams. We work for money-smart flood and water policy. We are working to restore salmon runs and the delta. We have a seven point plan for California's river and water future and not a single point includes a single mention of anything rafting related.

You keep maligning the organization I work for and I can tell you that you are way off base.

Bjorn,

I made no mention in my post of of the organization for which you work, it appears that you do quite a good job of mentioning the name of your employer at every opportunity.

I wish you the best of luck in your professional endeavors.
