Feather River steelies- in search mode report 17 Years, 10 Months ago
Hit the Feather River around Palermo and it is sad to report no steelies were caught-only those feisty Sacramento golden trout in the usual places during the early morning. The returning salmon in the river were even more dismal and disappointing than last year. With the flows low, one could almost cross the river. I tried before thinking it better not to have to swim in waders. We usually see a drift boat or two pass through during the day and at least DF&G in kayaks checking licenses- neither were on the water. Ran over to the Yuba in hopes of locating fish, nada. Water temps ran around 60-61 degrees. Moved up to the Highway 20 bridge on the Yuba for a look-see before heading home and spotted one vehicle parked on each side under the bridge- I expected more. Drove out on the road down river on the South side and spotted just few vehicles including a tow truck pulling a 2 WD truck off the river. Talked to the grandson in the truck while grandpa settled up with the tow service. They were there to fish for trout, but never made it to the river to fish. Ran up to Grass Valley for Pasties, some Finlandish type concoction of meat and potato turnovers that are a favorite for transplanted upper Michigan folks with us for the ride home. We encountered four accidents between the Sacramento Cause Way and Vacaville on 80 at sunset, making the ride home unbearable if you were the driver. The ride up in the dark between 4 and 6 AM could not have been better with nary a soul on the road. Hopefully the rains will bring in the fish, if not, it is gonna be along winter.

On a high note, stopped by Johnson's Bait and Tackle and talked with Tony Buzolich for spell. Low and behold, he pulls out a photo of no other than that out of state celebrity AZ Bruce with a $hit eating grin holding a steelie from past seasons. This guy or his photos of fish get around. I expect to see him on a TV show before long as his sphere of influence garners more locales. No explanation or identification was necessary after Willie put up a photo of this nefarious soul a couple of seasons ago. I am not certain if it was for avoidance issues or not.

Gitt,

Thanks for the update. I am going to give the North State a try in a week and a half for steelies.

Are you sure that picture of AZ Bruce was a picture and not a wanted poster?????
