Huck----Yes, John is very knowlegeable and will always dispense with a nuanced technique or piece of advice. He is there 2-3 days per week.
Also, during the "off-season" they have two fly fishing guides on staff in the fishing department. Currently they're present 4-5 days per week, but less when the season gets cranking...because they are guiding. Matt "Gilligan" Kole and "SawMill" Joe. Joe Cerniglia manages Sawmill Lake the local fly fishing only, fee lake located in the NorthStar area. There one can sight-fish for 2-4 pound "relocated" Mad River/Donaldson RainBows and the occassional Brown that Joe put in there two years ago...they've grown.
In addition to Joe and Matt, independent guides, who are Truckee full-time residents frequent the store and are always chatting with those guys in the fishing department. Hence, there is lots of local fly angling info being disseminated.
I know that Mt Harware & Sports is aware that TRO is no longer present and will fill the gap...and start stocking more fly fishing gear. I went there last week and now they have TFO rods. Already they had Scott rods and Simms waders and have always had a fully stocked fly tying area full of Umpqua and other well-know companies. Visit, you might be surprised.
In all honesty, I feel the store always had more fly fishing gear in stock than TRO. I think TRO's main focus was selling its "stabled" guide services and minimal retail. When Andy was no longer present there, IMO, less people visited. Simply, people wanted to see Andy.
