Ralph---Yeah I too am sad that TRO has left the local scene. Intially, when it opened in 2000(?), Andy was always there and he was the draw there being the knowledgable and congenial guy that he is. During the last 2-3 years he sort of disappeared and spent most of his time in the Reno Fly Shop. The staff at TRO was also congenial, some more so than others...with an occassional "know-it-all" behind the counter; which IMO is not always good for business. Locally, some of the staff became know as "Andy's groupies"; but unfortunately he was never around for them or for those older fly-anglers (...with fat wallets)who initally went to the shop to see and speak with Andy.
I think the fact that Andy was not present may have not have helped, even though, I'm guessing that the money made was mostly with the guide service. As for retail, I'm sure they moved some goods, but not alot. As for their fly inventory; it was always good...at the start of the season...then it got depleted by early summer and they seldom, it seemed, replenished the bins. So, a lot of locals, and visiting fly anglers, started to go to Mt Hardware & Sports because they always were replenishing their fly bins...and hence...purchased other incidental gear while they were there.
Interesting that you mention Mt Hardware and Sports. As I've previously posted, at least four people that work in the fishing department are hardcore fly anglers and extremely knowledgeable and are on top of existing conditions. One fella, John Lim, is the acknowledged lake expert; having fly fished the area's stillwaters for at least 35 years.
