I haven't fished the Calaveras for several years, due to extremely low flows and limited access. I've caught some decent fish there, but it's not high on my list of rivers to wet a line on. The Madison River it isn't!

I live near the Calaveras and fish it every once in while. It can be great fishing. I went once in late feb and caught a 16 incher on a scud pattern. That was my only fish for the three hours I was there. The best fishing is about a mile or so below the dam. For access in that portion of the river, research Calaveras County assessor maps along the river and you will find a few locations that the county has set aside for sportsmans access. The easments indicate where pedestrians have a right to access. As far as what they bite on. I have found that your normal patterns such as the hares ear, pheasant tail, and prince don't work as well as patterns like the san juan worm, scuds, and whooly buggers.

Not wantin' to rain on your Parade but those easements are not for public access. They are owned by the Rancho Calaveras Home Owners Association and are access for Rancho Calaveras H.O.A. members only. For fishing access to that area the R.C.H.O.A. sells (or used to, anyway) Associate memberships for $150 at their clubhouse up behind the Country Oaks Real estate office at the corner of Baldwin St. and Hiway 26.
