Yuba Report 3-06-08 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Joey and I fished the Yuba today from noon till 6pm. There was a little hatch going on when we arrived. Could not make out what they were but I was told tan #16. There were a few dinks rising but the big wind moved in and the sun went away. The water was off color with about 2ft visibility. We fished nymphs all day with no success. Joey had a couple grabs and I hooked about 5-7 rock fish that I was not able to land . There were about 8-10 cars on the Marysville side when we arrived. We fished down stream when we arrived and work our way up. We stayed late with hopes of an evening rise that never materialized. It was about 6:15pm when we returned to the car and all the others were gone . We talked to a few people and there were not too many fish caught but some were taken on various nymphs. We checked some rocks and there were skwalla nymph’s sz6-10 tan back and yellow belly. The adults were walking the rocks. Found caddis larva and small may flies. I kept changing flies but never had them on long enough to know if they were gonna work.

I was our first trip to moving water since we hit the Trinity on Dec. Was a nice day on the water. Was sunny when we left home and soon after we arrived the wind picked up and sun went behind the clouds till sunset. Almost felt like it was going to rain. This was the first time I fished the Yuba since we had the Bash. I think you have to put in some time there before you are rewarded.

Joe,

Hmmmm - seems that I recall being skunked the only time I ever fished the Yuba. I did learn a lot - like you can cast a LOT further with a spey rod than with a 9 fooot one hander. Belly Boat taught me that. Wonder what happened to him......

Glad you got out.

I've had some tough days on the Yuba as well...the first time I fished, I was just passing through on the way home from the McCloud. Caught four nice fish in about two hours nymphing. Obviously I had to go back the next day, for the whole day, and didn't get a single bump in about eight hours! I really can't predict what will happen on any given day there, but I think I have a skunky aroma more often than not.

That river does seem to have a learning curve, but it sure is an interesting place.
