Patagonia bound! 17 Years, 7 Months ago
leaving one week from today - to chilean patagonia - el saltamontes lodge.
http://www.elsaltamonteslodge.com/
needless to say, i'm pretty stoked.
way too many flies, way too many rods and reels, and way too much gear in general.
all strewn out in guest room - neatly applied to luggage this weekend.
didn't fish quite as much as usual this past year due to new baby, so this is really needed.
gotta thank my amazing wife for giving me the gift (40th Birthday) and taking care of things at home while i go play and travel for 10 days.
(those of you with babies understand)
will take lots of photos and plan to bring the HD videocam too - and will definitely post upon my return.
big browns on big hoppers by day - pisco sours and malbec by night.

Stay home. Phil has already caught all the fish. Don't waste your time, go somewhere interesting like Putah Creek or something......

That is such an awesome trip and truly a gift from your wife. As one who just went through that recently, please remember to return the favor to her. Maybe not 10 days straight, but definately a day or two. Even an afternoon to sleep was appreciated when my lil man was still a baby.

Enjoy your trip and post pictures. For the time being I will live through your fun travels!

Cheers,
Claudia

Man, that sounds like a great trip. Didn't know you were going.
Was buried last week, so didn't make it to the show....would have liked to see old 'show' friends and check out your pad.

The caddis are starting to pop here. Was out yesterday for 2.5 hrs, and landed 8 or 9 fish (missing a few). The first fish, first spot, on cast #5 was over 20".

Only gone 5 weeks this summer so lets rip it up in the springtime if the water is in shape. U.Sac, Pit, etc...
We'll see if that fancy gear works as well as my beat up old stuff.

Have a blast down there bro.
Stay safe.

hey - yeah - looking forward - today is a full on packing day.
will definitely be up your way in may 9/10 and july 11/12 and maybe once in between - got some dates booked with B - so we'll definitely get some fun in.
didn't make the show either - weather blew that weekend and i was hanging with my baby girl - giving wendy a break - plus the gear there is never quite fancy enough for me anyway - will give you a shout when i'm back from the bottom of the world - all the best.

another fly to try 17 Years, 7 Months ago
I recently got back from "hosting" two weeks(1/26-2/9/08)at the Picacho Lodge (www.picacholodge.com); about 3 hours form the Saltamontes Lodge...via real nasty roads. Foam, surface patterns will be used, unless you opt for the 'Bugger fishing. Aside from Noble Chernoblyl Hoppers & Triple-Deckers in various colors and sizes we had our best success with Fat Alberts, sizes 4-12; in either black of beige. Black produced the best, the largest being a 23" Rainbow and Browns to 22".

My experience on the Rio Nireahou (where the lodge is located) is that you'll see no rainbows, just aggressive, surface-gulping browns. Have fun there, it is a great stream. Be prepared for the wind; the Valley of the Moon is open with few trees.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

For my complete bio go to www.cyberlfy.com; then click-on my photo.

NOW FOR THE SPAM!!

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

Re:Patagonia bound! 17 Years, 7 Months ago
hey frank - thanks - yeah the hopper boxes are way loaded up with way too much foamy goodness - tons of fat alberts, chernobyls, triple deckers, and other assorted big and juicy stuff - yes - the nirehuao is all browns - looking forward to that for sure - and yes - as prepared for the wind as can be - new z-axis' seems to do better in that than the old winston's...

thanks again
