carpool lanes are rules that have a purpose of trying to cut down on traffic, (whether or not they work is something else). There is, in theory,a functional purpose for them. What we are talking about with fly fishing only has no functional purpose except to allow exclusive use by a small group. And don't even start with the "they could learn to fly fish arguement". That is an expensive and time consuming process that most fishermen can not afford. Fly fishing only regulations would serve no more of a resource protection purpose than the more inclusive artificial only regulations. one other posters suggested that it is no different than not allowing bait fishing or using a pitch fork, or using a motorized boat..that is not true at all because these are all issues that deal with resource protection. most motorized boat restrictions are due to protecting municipal water sources or because the wake action on small lakes would cause damage to the resource or possibly safety problems Bait fishing and pitch forks,,,,I don't think I even need to discuss why those have negative impacts to the resource.

And when the real "Troutnut" stands up you know it. He is one of a kind and one of the most active and productive of those of us who champion better fishing and hunting for all. He gives a lot of his personal time for all of us and those of us who know him really appreciate his efforts.

I'm large and in charge! I am the one and only, the original, the Alpha and the Omega. I had to change my handle to my birth name for a while when that assclown from troutnut.com came on here and started spamming the place and somehow swiped my handle, but when we switched boards a few months ago I got my handle back and passworded it this time so it can't used.

I had my mom on the phone, then a friend who needed computer tech'ing via the phone and I couldn't multi-task that much.
Bidwell Ranch has not always been flyfishing only with fly gear only. It used to be just 1 lake with those restrictions, one pond was anything goes (which it still is to this day) and the other waters back when American Sportsman Club was in business was managed any gear, barbless only, no bait. When ASC went out of business and WU picked up the lease, they changed the rules to fly only with fly fishing gear only on 3 of the 4 ponds. The size of the fish increased because they were living longer. Larger trout also stand a better chance of survival from hooking.
The gear guys are too effective catching fish. Plain and simple. That is why I have 20-30 casting and spinning reels too. We all have watched trout nose up underneath a fly or a natural and turn away. A guy with a Super-Duper, Mepps spinner, spoons ... tweak that one other trout instinct that it is tough to duplicate with a fly, the reaction bite. There is always some mortality when we catch and release, and a trout that snaphooks a lure zipping by may catch those hooks somewhere that does damage like gills, eyes... kinda like the way it is hard for me to drive past an In-and Out Burger without stopping.
There was a study recently done in Colorado on Rainbow Trout that compared 457 fly caught trout mortality (3.9% mortality), 505 trout caught using artificial baits fished actively, (21.6% mortality) and 511 trout caught using artificial baits fished passively (32.1% mortality). Water temperature, fish length, time played, time out of water, hook location, leader treatment, and bleeding intensity were recorded for each fish captured. Mortalities were recorded daily over a 3-week holding period.
ANother study showed that trout caught on bait died at higher rates than trout caught on artificial flies or lures, that fish caught on barbed hooks had higher mortality rates than fish caught on barbless hooks, that brown trout had lower mortality rates than other species of nonanadromous trout, and that wild trout died at higher rates than hatchery-reared trout. Other variables, including size of hooks, number of hooks, and water temperature, did not show a statistically significant relationship to hooking mortality. I will try to get a copy from AFS. For some reason my password didn't work when I tried to open it. (Maybe I'm delinquent)The guy that has done the most studies on the C&R, gear type issue is Jason F. Schreer, if you google him you will find more data.

Brooks, you have to admit that there are places where flyfishing and gear fishing are incompatible and wopuld be better if they didn't fish the exact same water. Come stand in a steelhead lineup on the coast with me and you'll see what I mean. Unfortunantly, we now live in a society where too many people are only worried about ME, ME, ME, ... and aren't considerate enough to say "self, that guy is flyfishing that spot, why don't I take my lazy butt around the next bend and fish there." Nope, the bum will low hole you and then bitch about you and your elitist gear.
Sometimes I curse modern medicine for extending the lifespan of some people who would be better off in the next plane of existence. (present company excluded, of course.)
PS> Please never try to tell me carpool lanes reduce traffic. That is the biggest screwing Jerry Brown ever did to California's freeways. I'd rather eat roadkill than vote for that freak.

Wow that's a huge difference. I wouldn't have expected it to be that large and thought a spinner caught fish released and treated well would fair just as well as streamer caught fish. Let us know what they defined as a "fly" in that study please. 1 in 5 mortality vs 1 in 25 would certainly get me thinking about methods.
