Buzz, you are right on the money.
"We need to force the government to spend the money we entrust to them more wisely, not reward their bad spending habits with more cash. (I could say the same about the public school system, but I will refrain - sort of!)."
You should indeed include the school system. We spend $11K+ plus a year per student. A classroom of 30 has over $330K allotted to it, but it sure doesn't seem like much of it gets there.
The parks and prisoner issue is akin to this: Say the feds tell the Army that it needs to make some budget cuts, and to come back with some suggestions on where it can. Is the Army going to suggest cutting, say, its band? Or maybe doing a thorough review to stop paying $100 per screw? OR perhaps even cut redundant administrative staff? Not a chance. The Army would come back and say, "Look, the only place we can cut anything is front line troops and equipment. If you want us to cut that, sure, but you'll take the rap for it."
Lo and behold, no one wants to be the guy who cut front line troops and the Army budget doesn't get cut.
I think this is a ploy to raise taxes. I do not believe that any parks will actually be closed, though obviously I could be wrong.

You are correct, let's ignore facts and get back to the budget issues.

Or how about this--let's place the blame for the state and the country's financial woes where it belongs: the lending industry that created lending practices that gave loans to people who couldn't afford them, which like so many white collar crimes (like Keating oh so many years ago) comes back to bite everyone in the ass. The state is in the red, but how many folks on this board have seen their investments or retirement accounts tumble in the last few months as a result of this meltdown? The financial woes we're seeing now are the result of greed, greed, greed, greed, and more greed. Maybe instead of those in jail having to maintain our parks, how about paying folks from Wells Fargo and Countrywide and Fannie Mae who've lost their jobs $6 an hour to empty garbage cans, keep trails clear, and do something constructive.

Now, Andrew. That would assume those people (never mind their CFOs) can even move their fat cat asses around a ballpark long enough, to walk up and look inside a trash can. Let alone be responsible for the contents.

What, are you nuts Beerfly? How stupid is that idea? Shit, by the time Hollywood and the SF Liberals get ahold of that, it'd become either insensitive, discriminitory, predjudicial, racist, unreasonal and so unjust, no politician would back the plan. Guaranteed these "leaders" would find something wrong with the idea. How about sending the illegal immigrants back to where they came from and free up some bucks from the ungodly sums paid for their education, health care and social programs they're sucking dry? Hey, there's an idea, enforce existing laws and save some dough ray me. What a joke...cut out state parks, & release prisoners early. Yeah, they'll be so grateful for their early release, they'll never use their newfound skills and instead, become responsible citizens. FTIR

No bigger "sucking sound" is coming than from the insurance and Big Pharma fellas, who (armed with MBAs, cash, and the undying loyalty of your elected, in DC) are making uninformed medical decisions about which antibiotic your kid, will receive. As well as contributing to a system in which 1/2 of all personal bankruptcy cases are due to medical bills (and most of the affected, actually have "healthcare" .
Dude.

PGW--
I don't know---
A intercity youth is custom for a warden--
I mean, just take out of the package and use, plug and play as they say.
Even a redneck poacher for Reagan would be intimidated with a Mac 9 ready to shoot his balls off.
Our fisheries would be safer, and our troubled youth would get some therapeutic fresh air!
I think everyone in on to a solution.
We just needed to use our imigination.

Dawn-
I also noticed Manchester on their list, and being a former resident of Pt Arena, it was a place of solace and wonder for me. I'm curious how this will effect access to Alder and Brush Creeks, both with good steelhead runs. The environmental walk in camps on Manchester Beach are truly some of the best beach camping on the North Coast.
