Taking Spey rods to AK? Any packing suggestions. 17 Years, 9 Months ago
I'm going up the Kenai this summer and want to take a couple of Spey rods. The problem is that the darn tubes are 44" long. Does anyone have packing or luggage suggestions?

The longest duffle bag I seem to be finding is around 42"? Does anyone have experience with the Bazooka style rod tubes? How are the airlines at actually getting them to their destinations?

The kids ice rink has frozen over in the front yard and we ready for a skating party and a white Christmas here at Tahoe this year. Right now we've got a couple of feet of snow on the ground here in Tahoma with more on the way tonight and the next 4 days.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.

Tight lines

I use the REI's XXX duffle to lug my 44" rod tube up to Canada. Although the duffle is 42" long, it is a soft bag and it easily accommodates my 44" tube. I usually put some clothing around the tube and put some REI straps on the outside to keep the bulk down. I have not had any problems with the airlines accepting the bag as regular luggage, although I have to admit that I am always waiting for the front counter people to tell me that it is subject to the excess size charge. But again, I have never been charged the fee and my bags have always made it to my destination.

See the REI bag at: http://www.rei.com/product/748505

I've been using a padded snowboard bag for the past four years. It's heavy duty and I can pack my waders, boots, fleece and all my other fishing related gear in it an stay under thirty pounds, safely secured with a TSA lock. Street clothes and shaving kit go in a soft, small carry-on size bag.
