Moving to Oregon... 14 Years, 6 Months ago
Hi Folks,

It's been quite a long time since I have posted. That didn't mean I had not been reading or visiting the board, just hadn't been posting.
Now the time has come that I have been waiting for, my move to Portland Oregon and the ability to explore and enjoy the fishing in that region.

Not to say that the fishing in California has not been good or fun or exciting but I crave steel and chrome and let's face it, that is just not happening in these parts to any great extent. I have enjoyed meeting many of you fine folks at the few Bashes and events I went to over the years. I have enjoyed corresponding with you and reading the many fine posts and have been overjoyed with this fine community of so many people so willing to share their knowledge and love of fly fishing.

I will miss you all and will continue to visit the board from time to time and hope to be a resource to anyone who decides to come fish the lower Deschutes River (which is where I learned to fly fish) or any other river in the region that I also hope to become familiar with.

I am thankful to many people who are members of the board who I would welcome the opportunity to fish with, share a beverage with or contemplate the universe around a campfire. I am grateful to many who were involved with the Rod Building bash of Feb 2006.

Time to bid farewell.

SteelheadFred

Fred,

I haven't visited the board in a LOOOONG time. I stopped by this morning to find some inspiration to get back on the water...

I run across Fred's email and can't believe the rod building bash was really 5 years ago!!!! We met at the rod building bash in Redding. You were kind enough to give me a ride home and it was a pleasure getting to know you.

I'll take you up on the offer when I get up towards Portland. All the best to you my friend!!!

Happy Trails and good luck,
Steely

Buzz,

I am on the ground here in a suburb of Portland and found that there is an REI and an Orvis store within 4/10's of a mile of where I am staying. Saw them driving in last night. I will have to change the emergency contact info on the rental agreement to the Orvis store...

I enjoyed meeting you and talking to you at that Rod building bash. I guess that bash was a life changer for you

Yes, should you ever get up this way, I would be happy to fish with you and show you what I know of the Deschutes and hopefully a few other rivers by then. Let me know and maybe I can help you plan a trip. I have a full slide presentation about the lower Deschutes that I gave to the Fly club I was a member of back in Calif. I would be happy to send it to you. Contact me offline.

Yes, I am still doing Quality Assurance Management, that is what brought me to Oregon for this new position. Lucky stroke on how everything is working out.

Best Regards, always!

Steely,

I remember that bash. It was a lot of fun and was the first bash I had attended. Yes, it is hard to believe that it was five years ago already. Man does time really fly by as we get older....

Of course I remember you and am grateful for the drive home as well. It would have been a long lonely drive without someone to share the ride with. I was very happy to give you a ride. Would do it again in a second.

Didn't we also get out fishing once after that? We hit the Russian together for a day of fishing if memory serves me well.
Glad to hear you are till around and sounding very healthy. Congrats on that.

I plan to explore a new river (to me anyways) this weekend. I have been invited by some fellows from a local fly fishing chat room to meet up this week after work and plan a weekend reccon of a local river.

Like I said in my first post, should you ever make it up this way, give me a shout and we can see what we can pull together fishing wise..

I hope you get back on the water. I was fishing the Russian a few weeks back when the weather was nice and managed a three fish day at one of my favorite places there. Egg patterns are what was working for me and a purple egg sucking leech.

After many years of wanting and wishing I will finally get to try the Salmon fly hatch on the Deschutes in May-June timeframe. I had always heard this was a great feast for the trout but had always been saving my vacation time for Steelhead in the fall.

Great to hear from you my friend!

Fred

I'm jealous, Fred. Yeah, it's been a long time. It looks as though I MIGHT be moving to NorCal in about 20 months, but OR and WA are where the steelheading is really at in the lower 48. The gf's sister lives in Portland, and I'd been planning to get up there and hit the Deschutes. Now, I've got even more incentive.

SHF,

You will be over the hill from Nancy and I. We broke ranks with California in October and now reside in Sunriver. Holler if you want to go fishing. Lot's of really good lakes close by! And the Deschutes is not too far either!

Hey Fred,

Seems like we all met you at that rod bash. Good times. I get up around Portland once in a while with son Michael's band, Culann's Hounds. If you like Irish music {or cajun, or sorta C&W http://www.sfhounds.com/} you might drop in sometime if we ever play the Thirsty Lion or Kells again.

Have fun, enjoy your new job and especially the fishing!!

Ed,

I'd have to say that that rod bash was something else. Really a good time and a lot of fun was had by all.

I could get into some Irish music. I have also picked up a new awareness and love of Scottish Single Malt Whiskies since I found out I have some pretty decent Scottish heritage. Yes, ancestors of mine hail from the River Spey region of Scotland and were traced back to the mid-1100's. Pretty neat stuff and they proudly fought the British rule. (he says as he pours a drink of Speyburn whiskey).

Hopefully I will have some decent info on some of the local rivers. I discovered today (1st day on the new job) that there are a couple of fishing enthusiasts or people with relatives who fish there. I am being invited to check some places out in the next few months.

I am looking forward to that.

Best Always,

SHF

Fred,

Sometime when you are ready for exactly one, but a peaty one, have a drop of Lagavulin 16. Kells used to carry it. It's worth the price of admission.

How does that stack up against Lafroiges, Ed? That's also peaty. I've gotten into Scotch also, in the past 6 months.

Lagavulin 16 stacks up against Laphroiag about like a wild steelhead stacks up to a carp.
