Fly line recommendations? 14 Years, 7 Months ago
Hi,

It's been a while since I've had to buy a fly line, and I'm not familiar with the current market. I'd like to get a line for Christiaan that's suitable for a beginner (him) and a tightwad (me). Any good lines out there that aren't $70 (or even $50)?

He's building up a Sevier "tiger eye brown" blank, 4/5 wt. I'm thinking a WF4 or a DT5 would be suitable for this rod... is that correct?

Thanks...

chuck o.

How about the Rio "Mainstream" line? I believe it's retail price is $39.95. And you can use the dealer locator at the Rio website (link below) to see if your local (nearest) flyshop either stocks or can order the line for you.

With the 4/5 rod, I'd suggest the WF5 to provide efficient loading with shorter amounts of line and larger masses of stuff like weighted nymphs, fluffy bobbers/indicators, or larger dries.

Live and learn,

Paul

Hook & Hackle carries their own brand. I've used them and they are very decent.

$25 for either WF or DT:

Check out Allen Fly Fishing. He's new to the business out of Indiana. I've bought lines from him as well as 4 of his reels - really good quality stuff and really good prices - both of which fit the bill for you. I highly recommend you take a look. I've always been a big supporter of the small scale operator. His stuff is great, not expensive, and the service is personal and friendly.

If you're close to the Western Sport Shop's Santa Rosa store, you may be able to score a line at a deal from a local shop...take a look at Jim's recent posts in the WSS Thread.
