Pyramid 15-18 April 15 Years, 7 Months ago
Having filed my automatic extension for income taxes on Monday, 12 April, I went to Sutcliffe NV with some friends on the 15th. Fished Pyramid Lake Thurs afternoon, all day Friday and Sat. Fished with Monterey Peninsula Fly Flingers. We started Fri-Sat at 0545, fished til noon, took a lunch/nap break, fished til dark.

We fished Pelican Beach Thurs PM, and Fri AM, I got one nice fish Thurs, one other got a Cui Ui, one got skunked, Thurs. The Sofa Rock just south of Pelican Beach was fully occupied every time we looked at it. Never did get to fish it.

We started Friday at Pelican Beach again. To our surprise, there was lots of room at 0545. Hangovers, I suppose. The other two guys got a very few at Pelican; I got zip. Then, about 9 AM, we drove north and tried Warrior Point, no fish. After lunch and a nap [??] we tried the old 'Slime Beach' [large slimy clay deposits at former waters edge] I got two late in the day, others got several each. It was occupied but not very crowded. We took a look at South Beach, and it was pretty well occupied at 3 PM. The fishing suffered some from lots of sun and too little wind, and what there was mostly from the east.

Sat AM: Started at Slime Point 0545: no wind to speak of, dead slow, drove to South Beach [3/4 mile south of Slime], no action; Washout Beach - no action; lunch and nap, cove south of Washout Beach, no action; back to South Beach - got a few, I managed one about 1800.

All the usual flies worked as well as anything else that I tried: #14 Red FB Copper John; Sparkly Black Wooly Bugger, White over Chartreuse beetle/tadpole. Lots of chases and missed strikes.

Turns out the switch rod Pappy built for me is pretty good at slinging a bobber long distances [for me] single handed. I caught all four [WHOOPEE!!!!] fish on rods he built.

Pelican Beach was wall to wall by Friday noon.

Saturday was so tough, that at South Beach at 1800, the ONLY ones on the beach, were the three off us, Greg Sano and his buddy Ernie. Even Greg was having a slow day. He hung it up at 8:00 PM. I can take a hint like that - I reeled up and went in.

Sunday morning as we left, the lake looked like a mirror, and again, at 0900, Greg and Ernie were the only ones fishing at South Beach.

DON'T LECTURE ME ABOUT DRIVING AROUND THE FREEKING LAKE INSTEAD OF FISHING. I AM TIRED OF TELLING THE OTHER GUYS THAT. AND THEN I GET
"OH, LOOK, THERE IS SOME WIND AT PELICAN, LET'S MOVE!"

ARGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

I got this guy about 1700 Thursday, right after we started. He ate a white / chartreuse beetle on a dropper ahead of a sparkle black bugger.

The food was good, but not up to Charlie's standards. Wine was missing, but there was more whiskey than was healthy for some.

We got home late afternoon Sunday, a bit frustrated; except for me. That is my biggest trout ever, regardless of species or continent. I'll take it!!

Our tradition is that of the first man who sneaked away to the creek
when the tribe did not really need fish.
