Vallarta Report 15 Years, 9 Months ago
Had two weeks in Nuevo Vallarta and fished almost every day. Had some really, really fun fishing with 5 species caught and my largest saltwater fish to date... a 12.8 pound Jack Crevalle that was more fun that was reasonable. We had a day of rain that blew the river out, but in 2 days time it was fishing great again. Didn't make it up to Punta Mita or out on a panga... maybe next time.

Most of my fishing in Vallarta is right at the river mouth... might wade out, maybe 5 feet to 40 feet. The big fish was hooked wading out about 10 feet. The fly was a #2 Surf Candy on a 7 wt with a clear sly line... now, I usually catch fish at or around a pound out there... 2 pounds being a good fish. So, the big fish was a surprise and the 7 wt. was outgunned. Saw the black of the spool on that fish.

Clousers, gummies, surf candy... even caught a few fish on a #2 Gotcha.

Here are more pictures and more details on other species caught... http://wp.me/PCfe5-gI

I also fished an Albright GP 8/9 weight and that was a good rod (once I stopped trying to cast 2/0 poppers with it). My 7 wt. walked off the beach (in the hands of some SO, so I had to fish the Albright the last couple days. Worked well though.

I understand there is some better shore fishing around Punta Mita (Roosters and Snook around and better water clarity). You can get a panga and head out from either Vallarta or Punta Mita, but I haven't done either. This was just fishing for 2-3 hours while my daughter was napping. Saw a big swing in tides over that time and the fish did move, but not too far.

Good times.
