They don't fight as well as a rainbow, but then, what does? They were downlisted a number of years ago from endangered to threatened, and might soon be downlisted yet again.

The White Mt. Apache Tribe and AZ G&F Dept. have done a pretty good job of saving this species. They can now be found in a number of lakes and streams, both on and off the reservation. Large fish of 18" - 28" are stocked in a number of locations. The one in hand was about 18". It was caught in a small spring creek with special regs, including C&R this time of year.

Before I saw the picture from Phil's posting, I was going to guess the fish was a "Piaute Trout"(sp). I saw a picture of one in the Las Vegas nook of Bass Pros shop fly den. The fish was approximately 25 inches according to the description and was caught in Christmas Tree lake in New Mexico.

To me the fish in the Bass Pro shop looked similar to the trout that come out of Pyramid Lake. Of course, never having seen, much less caught a trout out of Pyramid lake the trout could be any sub-species. In any event, a very pretty fish.
