Spike, in reference to Alpine, fish the opposite side of the lake. not the highway side. I usually drive in the amphitheater access past the camp grounds (west side of lake) and get as close to the dam as possible. I am thinking with pram, float tube or kick boat. Try a wooley bugger and a soft hackle trailer. Fish the shaded water as close to shore as possible and fish the soft hackle 2-3 strips and follow up with wooley bugger. Most fish will be caught on the soft hackle. The granite wall next to the dam holds large fish, try streamers there. Cover the whole shoreline along the shadows for best results. There is also some structure the opposite shore that holds fish as well. Down wind side of the lake will have lots of insects stuck along the shore that will give you an idea of the surface insect activity as far as the sampling.
Hope this helps. Let me know how ya do.
