We wanted to bring you up to date on the progress of the Board software issues and upgrades. Dustin, Greg and I met in Cobb today to review alternatives for resolving the WSOD (White Screen of Death) posting issue on the Board. We (Greg and Dustin) were successful in the test environment installing Kunena, which is the replacement for Fireboard. We also successfully loaded the Board Database containing historical posts. The good news is that this version of the software appears to have resolved the issues causing the repeated WSOD error that has been prevalent recently. We were able to view many of the posts that exist in the database that have users have not been able to access due to this error.
Our plans are to continue working in the test environment to ensure that the software is fully configured and working within the NCFFB environment. We anticipate releasing a version of the software in the next few weeks so that users can preview the software in the test environment. After confirming the installation of the software we will go ahead and install in the live environment.
We do want to make people aware that Kunena currently does not support the “Threaded View”, which is the preferred alternative with many users on the NCFFB. This step is an interim measure until we can program the threaded view alternative into the Kunena software. Greg has agreed to take this action item on and work with the Kunena software engineers to make this a reality. While we understand this may impact users who rely the threaded format, the Steering Committee believes it is in the best interests of the Board to solve the posting issues as a priority, and work to re-introduce the threaded view as soon as software updates can be made.
Subsequent to the Kunena upgrade, we also plan on working to upgrade the overall site to Joomla 1.5. This will improve stability, security and should result in improved performance.
We will keep you up to speed on developments as they occur.
