My friend Ben and I floated the Moke on Monday with Bill Heger, Owner of Bill Heger Guide Service
http://www.billhegerguideservice.com. We put in below Camanche and floated down to the Mackville Road takeout.
Ben is just getting into fly fishing and Bill did an excellent job helping Ben learn some of the finer points. Ben landed his first fish on a dry fly as well as his first fish on a nymph. Dry flies of choice were E/C Caddis and Elk Hair Caddis, with more fish preferring the E/C than the EHC. The fish seemed to like the Micro Mayfly as well, with most of our nymph fish coming on it. Bill and Ben also threw Prince Nymphs at them. We hooked a lot of fish, but could not seem to land all of them. I hooked and lost 4 fish on a bugger pattern Bill gave me. All the fish seemed to be acrobats, even the little guys. The larger fish I hooked on the bugger did some amazing tricks to throw the hook back at me.
If you are looking for a float that is local and reasonable, give Bill a shot. Tell him I sent you...
The most memorable moment, short of Ben's first fly caught fish of course, were the people on kayaks that floated by us and ran into a huge overhanging blackberry snag in one of the holes. Not 1, not 2 but 4 kayaks all went through the same slot, right behind each other and all hit the same snag. They were dragged right out of the kayaks and dumped into the river. They did not even seem to try and paddle to dodge the thing. I wish I had a video camera, that clip could have won on America's Funniest Home Videos. It was priceless.
