Slo,
I have to agree with some of the others here. AZB did not create the crowded conditions on the Trinity. The Trinity itself is the cause of its own success. Last year a 60,000 fish + run and many, many guide boats on the river to a point where certain afternoons I had a dozen boats pass me in the last hour. Reports of 20 and 30 fish days on telephone calls between friends that get shared with friends, that get shared with other friends via email. I was dismayed this year when I stopped by the Douglas City store to get coffee and a sandwich and in the course of swapping small talk about steelhead fishing, the owner, unsolicted, directed me to my favorite run that I can almost always get without company. Guess what. Two weeks ago I was able to fish it once in three days, and had to wait out a guide boat for an hour to do it. The other two days featured walk in folks fishing the run. The Trinity run this year is dramatically below the past couple of years and will result in fewer people fishing the river. This year the river has returned to where it was several years ago in terms of catch rates. A fish or two in a day, or none is the river I remember 4-5 years ago when the crowds were less. A few more $500/day guide trips with no hooks ups will result in fewer fisherman.
With the internet, there are no longer any secrets. There are a bunch of boards out there and fly clubs and everyone IS talking to everyone about what's happening up to the minute via email.
What I appreciate about AZB's reports is they are entertaining, and enthusiatstic, maybe too much for some but so be it. He is posting a fishing report without giving too much information about specifics. A FISHING REPORT! What a novel concept. Let's get a few more of them posted!
