Books that came to my mind were:
Shasta's Headwaters by Craig Graham Ballenger. It has a good history on the rivers that flow into Lake Shasta. Also Fly-Fishing Northern California Waters by Lil Tso Wong. Trout Fishing the John Muir Trail by Steve Beck. The Definitive Guide to Fishing Northern California by Chris Shaffer. Plumas National Forest Trout Fishing Guide by Andrew Harris. Another interesting read was Nevada Angler, FishTails in the Sagebrush by Richard Dickerson.

That should keep you busy for a while...
