Hi Michelle,
As you discovered, the PM "button" underneach a user's info on the left of one of their posts does not work.
To send a PM, click on their name or photo to go to their profile page.
Once there, hover your mouse over the "Messages" link above their profile page, then select "Send Private Message".
Then you can type and send your PM.
Alternatively, from the main "Campfire" page, you can click on your Private Message Link, which is just to the right of the fish icon in the top bar. It usually says "0 Unread".
Once there, you can click on the "New Message" button to create your PM. You will have to manually enter the person's handle in the "To" box, but as you type it will create a dropdown list of users to select from.
I know, it is a little complicated, but it works...
