Just back from 6 weeks on a newly discovered river in a very remote part of AK with no other lodges, boats, or floatplanes. It's basically a private river.
As much as I love lower 48 trout, up there we measured fish by pounds, not inches. It was kick-a$$!
The target was chrome kings on a fly, and man-o-man was it unreal.
The river was the PERFECT size for fly fishing, and the numbers were huge. Most of the fishing was done about 15-20 miles from tidewater. In the past I had fished rivers like the Nush and Nak, which have good numbers of kings, but the rivers are HUGE. This place was perfect! It wasn't difficult to get your fly to the other side, expecially with a spey rod. Our average fish was 18-25 pounds, and the freshest one I personally landed had 12 sea lice on her! Yeah, TWELVE!!! Largest I put to scale was about 36 pounds. We also ran into lots of hard fighting chromer chums the last week, and sporatic steelhead over the 6 weeks I was there. Char were starting to show, as were occasional rainbows...getting ready for the egg feast. In three to four weeks steelhead really flood the system, along with silvers. It's a very healthy river system, with hatches of caddis, stoneflies, and mayflies while I was there. Something rarely seen on AK rivers.
This is THE PLACE for kings on a fly. Incredible river, beautiful area, and we had it all to ourselves, which is becoming a hard thing to find. (If you are interested in more detailed information, email me.)
Some days, two anglers could hook over 30 kings on a fly, with 4 out of 5 still covered in sea lice.
Here's a pic of a great spey caster from the UK I had the pleasure of guiding. This was the 2nd fish of a "3 cast, 3 fish landed" show he put on one morning.
