Quincy to Graeagle tent camping??? 14 Years, 10 Months ago
I've just spent an hour on the internet searching for tent camping sites on the Middle Feather from Quincy to Graeagle. There doesn't seem to be any. Should I blame Bush or Obama? Maybe I'm too cheap. Perhaps I should take the money I got from Obama's tax break (yes its real ) and spend it on a cabin. Any info (non Bush or Obama related) would be appreciated. Anyone (other than Bush or Obama) have any info on Nelson Creek in that area? Mike

Do you have Tom Stienstra's "Moon California Camping" book? That's pretty much my goto source for info about campsites in Northern California.

You might also check with Jay Clark. He is a guide who lives in the area and has lived there all his life. He knows the area like the back of his hand and is very helpful.

A neat trick for finding some campgrounds: Use maps.google.com, and have it calculate a route from Quincy to Graeagle. Then click on "Search nearby" and type "campgrounds" into the search box, and it will show you what it thinks are campgrounds along the way. Sometimes very useful, sometimes not.

I live in Thompson Valley just a few miles from Nelson Creek. Nice little creek with good trail access in a steep canyon. There are some free primitive campsites (outhouses but no running water.) along the Middle Fork just before you get to Nelson Creek. They are often full during the summer. Only a few sites. (Mostly miners that ignore the 14 day camping limit until the USFS gives them the boot.) Nice spot that should get better (less crowded and better fishing) after Labor Day. There are a couple private campgrounds between Quincy and Graeagle but nothing to write home about. Plumas Eureka State park campground is currently close to a plague outbreak in the chipmunk population. Lakes Basin is past Graeagle, but worth considering. Beautiful area with good but not great fishing in many small high elevation lakes. Hope that helps.

Plenty of camping around Sloat. Primitive camping on National Forest land, but it is free of course. Nice valley a couple miles west of Sloat that you should not have much trouble finding. Couple of nice sites above Nelson confluence too. Again, not developed.
