Trinity Report 17 Years, 1 Month ago
Fished the Trinity this weekend. Following is a fishing report in three words: Cold, wet and tough! But fish were caught. I'll let the pictures tell the story.

Heavy Snowshower Friday Afternoon

The Summit below Weaverville

Secret Spot Near a Bridge

Working a good run

Restoration area in DC

A Thousand Casts Later, Success - A Nice 28" Steelie!

PS: There was an Arizona Bruce Sighting. His 2009 Steelhead Card did not look good!

Chains over Buckhorn. I've got 4WD, so they let me through. Not too bad, but took it easy. Reports of a couple spin-outs Sunday morning, but fortunately missed them.

Off and on all weekend there were chains required over both Buckhorn and the pass to the west of Weaverville. I went down river Saturday and the roads were clear. But a foot of new snow on the ground at the summit.

The river is sure Purty with a white dressing around it!

Phil,

Thanks for the road report. I almost went over yesterday but it has been raining hard here in Red Bluff so I didn't feel like braving those roads. I may go Friday.

Watch the river levels. It had come up significantly Sunday and was borderline fishable at DC. Saw it rose further yesterday, but should come down later in the week. The ground is pretty saturated up there, finally!

Phil, I'll be heading up there on Wednesday. What fly patterns did you use? Methods??

Nymphs. Golden stones seemed like a common choice amongst several I talked with, and they did catch fish. I also tried the usual assortment of copper johns, bird's nest, PT's, eggs, etc, etc. Pretty much threw the whole box at them!

The water is cold, and I think the important part is getting the fly in front of them as much or more than fly pattern. Plus, there are not tons of fish in the system. If you're not hooking up, move to find them. I talked to a couple of fellows that floated and had reasonable success.

Got up there Wednesday morning. Got out of the car and could smell a skunk! Not a good sign!!! I think I need to hire a guide to learn how to fish the Trinity for steelhead. There were fish everywhere but couldn't get one to take.

how bad are the roads down on the trinity now? I am thinking about hitting it this weekend if the rivers elsewhere get too muddy, I just dont want to take the risk of the roads being awefull
