Toothy Critter Leader from Rio - knot? 17 Years, 3 Months ago
Yo... hoping someone can give some advice. I picked up a couple of Rio Toothy Critter leaders for my upcoming Bahamas trip (7.5 foot, 15-30 pound bronze), just in case I come across a baracuda. Do you just tie on a fly like normal or do you need a special knot?

I use surflon micro supreme leader wire for this. I just build my own tapered leader and for the final section use about 2 ft of wire. I suspect your leaders will be similar. I have found that I cannot use my usual uni knot with this material because it tends to kink the wire too much as I tighten it up. A standard clinch knot seems to tighten up much better. The key seems to be to tighten the knot as close as possible to the eye of the hook because lubricating the wire with spit as you would with mono/f.c. does little to aid in reducing line kink.

Hope this helps.

MarcP,

I gave up trying to tie a clinch knot using the coated Sevenstrand wire and use either a plain Figure Eight knot or a Hommer Rhode Loop knot to attach the fly to the bite tippet. I found the secret to tying both of these was using two pair of pliers when cinching up.

I'd almost bet that a clinch knot would tighten up without a kink if two pair of pliers were used.

My problems with wire were more related to the kinking of the material with the uni knot then with actually getting the knot to cinch up. The uni knot, has a tendency to twist as tightening which kinks the wire leader material. I have also used two pairs of pliers in the past to tighten up the clinch knot and this has worked well for me.

I also noticed that this "toothy critter" leader material is coated with nylon. This may help to eliminate the problems I have had as it should slide against itself more easily.

The reason I like the wire leader material more then the pre-made leaders is that when I am on the East coast fishing for stripers/albies and a school of blues moves in and starts blowing up bait fish I can add the wire to avoid loosing flies. The stripers and albies are a little more wire shy so I try to avoid the wire when possible.

A few things you need to know about me:

I has been known to cure narcolepsy, just by walking into the room. My organ donation card, also lists my beard. I'm a lover, not a fighter, but I'm also a fighter, so don’t get any ideas. just a great, easy all around salt water knot - perfect for wire - plus it leaves a nice loop for better action on the fly.

I used those on pike. I was told to twist it and then hit it with a lighter, it melts the coating together. Worked for me. Make sure not to hold the lighter on it too long, did that too.

Re:Use the Davy Knot 17 Years, 3 Months ago
That Davy Knot looks very, very interesting. I haven't changed a knot in my set ups for about 8-9 years, but this looks interesting. Anyone know if there are applications that this might not work well for? Floro? light tippet?

It seems like it might be a good knot on small bugs where a Clinch Knot is almost as big as the head of the fly (think #20's).

I'm wondering who uses this knot and for what applications.

Bjorn

I found the Davy knot while playing on the internet last year (always have had a interest in knots). Looked very easy to tie for my old hands so I used it all this year. It is very easy and quick to tie. It worked great for me on tippets from 3x to 6x (mostly stillwater fishing from a tube). Never had a failure on fish to 24 inches on 3x. I use a loop-to-loop system for attaching leaders and any failures I had were at the top loop - a triple surgeons knot. Knot at fly never broke. Am looking for a better loop knot as I find a perfection loop hard to tie in lighter lines (works great in 20# and up). Will be interested to see if anyone else has tried the Davy knot.

If you have Net Flicks I recommend checking out the Wet Fly Ways video. I don't own a 10'-12' 4 weight, but his methods work okay with my 8'6" 5 wt.

Here is a link to Davy's website: http://www.davywotton.com/index.asp

Discovering this knot kind of feels like discovering chocolate ice cream after a lifetime of only eating vanilla.

Sweet.
