I typically don't use an indicator...just preference. But last
year on a local river I put on some strike putty. My fishing
buddy berated me (all in good fun).

I like the putty. One article I read said to put a small amount
of putty 4 feet up from your fly, and another small bit maybe two
feet up. It sure helps you see where your fly is during a drift.

I'll continue to use it.

Anglernut.

I'll have to try that. Thanks.

It IS possible to hook fish without an indicator on the Juan high-sticking small nymphs, but sometimes you want to catch fish!

Indicator fishing produces a LOT more fish there. Even the guys who arrive and say, "I don't use indicators" usually go over to the darker side of fly fishing when all those around them are hauling 'em in.

That's like saying, "breathe every day" 17 Years, 3 Months ago
it's self evident

Seriously, I've gotta tell you that some of the most exciting times for me have been the grab on the swing or while skating for steelies.

However, those days of 20+ fish on the Trinity LAST year, while bobicating, are also quite memorable...not to be confused with the Trinity THIS year where it's 20+ days per fish

A dam is about the best indicator of tailwater.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Ya, I've heard the reports haven't been too good.

I'm 25 min from the American River in Sacramento. The run has
been piss poor. Hoping that the rain coming this w/e will bring
in some adult fish. Never seen it this bad before.

And the half pounder run we get in Sept/Oct was also terrible.
I dont' get it.

Favorite Tip: Fish More Shot! 17 Years, 3 Months ago
A lot of clients ask me what the biggest secret to indicator fishing is and I tell them that it is using more split shot. Yeah your drift needs to be good but if you are not getting down to the fish then it doesn't matter how sexy your drift is. Trout live on the bottom of the river and if you aren't hitting the bottom every once in a while then you are probably not fishing deep enough.

Losing a few more flies on the bottom of the river will probably increase your chances of hooking a lot more rainbows and steelhead.

Remember more split shot next time!

Hope that helps!

Hey Iceman! 17 Years, 3 Months ago
My old eyes can no longer see the line as it enters the water surface while high sticking. Tried the putty but it leaves "residue" on the line. Now I use a small piece of glo bug yarn tied on about one foot above the surface. Easy to adjust and see. My Pit pals always give me crap about using a bobicator when they see this set up! And yes, I have had a few fish chase the yarn if I don't keep it off the water. You got any time to hit the F during the holidays? -Maestro-
