Thanks for the report Bruce and nice seeing you again this year at the Motel T. Like you, I found the fishing hit and miss the weekend I was there. I had a nice day on a Friday and hooked several fish in some of my usual spots. Saturday I met up with Buzz and his son Dave and we fished our guts out and moved to a number of runs throughout the river. Nada, zilch. Tough day that I can only characterize as steelhead fishing. We tried like the dickens to get Buzz's son into fish to no avail. Late in the afternoon I returned to several of my favorite runs to finish out the last hour and I did not find a run open, so called cocktail and got out of the rain. Sunday rather than fight the crowds I took a camera out to try and catch the spectacular fall colors around the river. It sounds like my last day with a camera was much more successful than yours at that ever popular run near a bridge in DC!

Here's a couple of pictures from the weekend:

I fished the Trinity yesterday and it is still slow. I talked with a couple of guides in the afternoon and they were also saying the morning fishing had been slow. Sure isn't like last year.

Last year was like the 1950's and early 60's. We could do no wrong. Everything came to us easily. Life was good and all was right in the world.

I remember a day when I was in the process of hooking a ridiculous number of metalheads, and I stopped and gave thanks, knowing it would never be that good again.

I was blessed merely to have experienced a steelheading season like 2007. I will cherish those experiences for the remainder of my life.

(Of course, I WAS hoping that 2008 would be a replay of '07, but that was not to be.)

I agree the Trinity is sloooooow! Very few of the people I talked with had hooked up or even seen a fish. I fished very hard for two days and only caught one fish. Here's a pic...

Tight lines!

It was good fishing with you on the T----
Even with the broken ribs, I got through 7 days on the river.
How were the photos?

Hi Scott,

Oh I AM pleased that you're back on board. I've got a dandy of a photo to send you, that I won't post for harmony's sake. I'd be accused of bragging or something like that.

Anyhow, send me your email address as a private message and I'll email you a shot or two.

Good meeting you on the water. That spot just got worse and worse until it fizzled out altogether. I think the metalheads zipped upstream.

Honestly Bruce, do you care really care if someone were to accuse you of bragging or something. What the heck has happened to this board?

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Why throw fuel on the fire? It's the holiday season and I don't feel like reading any slop thrown in my direction by the garbage men.

I also don't post pix until after the run has petered out.

In the same vain, I'll post that I went to the T, but don't give out info that might start a stampede...no matter what others might post. (I do, however, always try to share techniques and/or patterns that work. THAT'S what this board is supposed to be about.)

AND, since there's a fine line between bragging and sharing, I'll err on the conservative side. (Bragging is one of my shortfalls, although if you check my past posts you'll also find I readily admit when my fishing and skills suck...which is definitely a large part of the time.)

When you write, "What the heck has happened to this board", if you're referring to fewer posts listing "spots" or showing pix of nice steelies that might promote a specific run, it's all about numbers.

Friends who have been on the NCFFB years longer than myself have told me that specifics used to be shared, but then the fly fishing population at large began showing up at those spots on the rivers mentioned.

I'm now very careful about sharing my spots.

Baaarucie,

The Shepherd is quite naturally, a literal master of the written word. The Shepherd could describe something as mundane as a flea-bitten mutt, taking a crap on your nextdoor neighbor's lawn and transform that into a cerebrally enlightening experience for the member's of the flock. The Shepherd's gifted ability to move masses with his mere words is not only superlative, it's not only superhuman, but downright GODLIKE!

That being stated, even the Shepherd has emmense difficultly finding the proper words needed to vividly describe just how badly you suck with the flyrod. From your lousy casting stroke, to your limp-wristed fish fighting style, to your complete lack of anything remotely resembling a working knowledge of aquatic inverts........ You sir, are "Inepptitude Personified" while astream........
