Question on books 17 Years, 5 Months ago
Having recently moved here from the east coast I am interested in learning more about my new local waters in NorCal particularly the greater Redding area. Are there any books that you feel are exceptionally informative on a particular aspect of fly fishing in the area? I'm interested in local nuances in technique, fishing locations, and both the history of the watersheds and of fly fishing in California.

I've already got some great info from my local fly shop, Alan Lufkin's book CA Salmon and Steelhead, and Schollmeyer's Hatch Guide but I'd like to continue to build on this.

Thanks!

MarcP

While not specifically for Northern California, Bill Sunderland's Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada would be a good addition to your library.

In addition to the book already mentioned, get Bill Sunderland's California Blue Ribbon Trout Streams and if you are into lake fishing, try Mr. Sunderland's book Fly Fishing California Stillwaters. Best bet is to locate a local fly club in the Redding area. The wealth of readily available information from a group of like thinkers far exceeds any books out there for garnering information on local waters. Seth Norman's book is worth a look:

And I'd recommend you subscribe to the California FlyFisher magazine.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Books that came to my mind were:
Shasta's Headwaters by Craig Graham Ballenger. It has a good history on the rivers that flow into Lake Shasta. Also Fly-Fishing Northern California Waters by Lil Tso Wong. Trout Fishing the John Muir Trail by Steve Beck. The Definitive Guide to Fishing Northern California by Chris Shaffer. Plumas National Forest Trout Fishing Guide by Andrew Harris. Another interesting read was Nevada Angler, FishTails in the Sagebrush by Richard Dickerson.

That should keep you busy for a while...

Old Trout---Bingo!...I concurr. Seth's Noramn's Fly Fisher's Guide to Nothern California is an excellent choice relative to an overall book on Northern California fly angling...and I'm not being biased because I wrote the chapter on the Truckee River. Although it does need revising because of all the new regs that came to being in 2007.

IMO, it is a far better reference than Lilly Wong's book. I feel that those who have referenced both may agree (...sans the lack of updated regs; in both Norman's & Wong's books).

A good regional reference for the northern Sierra... thus far not noted, is Stephen Haggard's Fly Fishing the Tahoe Region.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

NOW FOR THE SPAM!!

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.
