Fished the Klamath on wed. Fished in the AM for salmon, with no luck. Drift boats bouncing roe were hooking up all over. I decided to try for trout with a small bead head. After just a few casts I hooked up with a giant rainbow. At first I didn't know just how big this thing was and I was just acting like it was a normal fish, until it nearly pulled my rod out of my hand. With my attitude changed I put on my game face and went to work. First I adjusted my drag then put my rod tip into a fighting position. When the fish felt the tension on the line it took off like a rocket. I took off running down river after it; yelling at my friends, "pull your line in, this one is a big one". Thats when my friend said, "yea right looks like some moss in the current". Just as soon as he had said that this whale jumped about twenty feet in front of him. It was the first of five jumps and I can say that it was my second best fight on a fly rod ever!! After about thirty min. of fighting my wrist actually started to hurt. By the time I banked it all my friends were standing around me with nets and telling me what to do. It was actually a funny sight; we were all so excited because all of us had gotten skunked on the salmon. I tried to do everything the way my father taught me to do a child. My friend crouched down like a ninja with his net and with a little imagination it looked like a Katana; the assassin going in for the kill. Well I could blame it on my friend with the not so ninja like reflexes or on the #14 barbless hook, or I could take the credit for loosing it myself when it was practically on the shore, or I could even blame the hook maker for not making the hook sharp enough to give me that deep penetration that I needed to land this monster. Well whatever the reason, the fact still remains that it was the second best fight I have ever had. I thank the trout gods for smiling upon me for a glorious thirty minuets that will last a lifetime. Just FYI I estimate the size to be 25-30 inch and 8-12 lbs. I have caught a couple of trout in this class in lakes, but they just don't have the fight that these trout have in them. Lots of food, superior genetics and constant clean water flows make this river's trout special in my opinion. I also landed a nice 16" bow about five minuets after that one. I was all excited about the prospect of catching more large trout and my friends wanted to go. I was kind of sad to go, after all it was only 1 PM, but they weren't catching anything so I understood. -Pit
