Maine - Labor Day 17 Years, 9 Months ago
Howdy folks... I'm looking for a guide recommendation for Maine... we'll be there around Labor Day, staying in Naples, ME. I have no idea what's around, but would love to go after stripers if possible since the trout should be pretty well hunkered down.

Ideas?

Don't know much about fishing in Maine these days. When I was a kid, growing up in NY, we'd go to Maine almost every summer for vacation. The Five Kezar Lakes. Bass, perch, catfish, pike, pretty great stuff.

Looks like a good time to me. I found some guides through the Orvis website. I tried calling the Cabela's store right close to where we'll be and they were about as helpful as a sweater in Placerville in July (not very).

We'll see what ends up working out.

Bjorn,

You called Cabela's about Maine, the home of LL Bean?? Hmmmm...

My only sources are guys ho post on the old Virtual Fly Shop

http://out...oforum.com/zeromain?id=8

Swamp Yankee; Tim S; Magalloway; Fishing Banjo come to mind.

I don't think the trout are anywhere near hunkered down at Labor day, even if you get up around Caribou.

You might try a post on the Main Board there asking about guides or about fishing in that area around Labor Day.

I will tell you what the old Down Easters say in response to the question:
What do you do up here after Labor day??

Answer: We fumigate.

I hope your trip is after Labor day, because Labor Day in New England in general is the Last Hurrah for the summer, and is a zoo in all the tourist detinations. You may find a guide who is happy to have some sports after Labor Day (or not)

Hope it works out well for you.

Well the trip is a little before and a little after, so we'll be there for the masses. I contacted a few guides I found through Orvis and have heard back from them... one a drift trip for Smallies, another a saltwater trip for stripers and bluefish. Interesting options... we'll see.

Let me tell ya about my fine experience in Maine.

1970, my friends mom rent a "summer rental" in Stonington, on the coast. Turns out it's a basement of a house, sleeps 8, that's if 2 people sleep on the couch, not a pull out, just a couch. Beach cabana, that was a screen tent over a wooden floor next to a bay where if the tide was out, you had to wade through 50 yds of muck to get to 1 1/2 ft of water.

One night we went into town to see a movie. The theater was an old Opera house, seating was folding chairs. The projector was set up behind the chairs, movie was rated R but not at this theater (my guess is so they could get as many of the 50 seats filled), when the R rated part came on, they just turned off the light bulb in the projector.

The entire time it rained, after 4 days of a weeks stay, my family decided it was time to leave.

Hope yours is better than mine
