Upper Sac Report 17 Years, 9 Months ago
With the grandparents doing baby watching I got to fish the Upper Sac today. Gotta say it was a bit off for me. I fished above Prospect by about a 25 minute walk or so. Nymphs just were not producing in places they should be... the fly that finally started working was a black rubber legs... I had one, I lost it on a fish. The other stone patterns I had just weren't the same. I picked up 7 on nymphs over about 3-3.5 hours... then I figured if the fishing was going to be slow, I might as well fish dries. I just did short line dry fly fishing with a #16 Royal Wulff and then a #16 EC Caddis. That was the ticket... not big fish, but lots and lots of missed opportunities too. Lots of fun. Ended the day at about 4 with about 17 fish to hand. Largest about 13-14". The hiking took it out of me. I lost POUNDS of water today, even though I had a hydration pack. The water was surprisingly cool. I was going to wet wade, but once I put my hand in the water I banished the thought.

The smoke is just starting to get to the area. It has been nice to be out of it. There were actually stars in the sky last night... haven't seen those in weeks.

I have some pics that I'll get up later.

Dang Bjorn, once again, almost Bjornian numbers. You must be losing your touch! Thanks for sharing the report. I gotta get fishing. Probably be first of September in Oregon. Can't wait.

Yeah, I put in the hours, but didn't get the production I'm used to on this river. After all my hiking in/around the river today I am certainly feeling mortal... geez... out of shape!

I fished the same section you did on Friday evening (above Mossbrae Falls) and had similar results. No large fish but lots of opportunities, etc. I landed 9 and all were on dries. I think the key to that section of the river is to keep moving if you don't have good results in one area, since the numerous micro-climates in that section can have dramatic effects on the fishing. It was pretty slow below Mossbrae Falls but above the falls it was a whole different ballgame

I think moving is the key to just about anywhere on the river, really (or any other river). Funny thing... Mossbrae down to the run above Prospect has always fished really poorly for me. Above Mossbrae has been good and Prospect has been good. Really, Prospect has fished very well for me despite the amount of pressure the place gets... which is a lot.

I do love that water up above though... I just wish I could stay out long enough to enjoy the evening rise up there. I fished it once, but it was a bit uncomfortable walking back in the dark with the feeling that a mountain lion might be ready to pounce.
