Truckee River Outfitter Closing 17 Years, 6 Months ago
http://www...RTS01/31046218/-1/SPORTS

Looks like Truckee River Outfitters is closing their doors... seems to be a trend... lots of local shops seem to be getting out of the game. Now is the time to put down the Cabela's catalog and go visit your local shop, while you still can.

That really, really, really sucks. I understand the reasons, but it doesn't mean I have to like them.
Best of luck to the gang at Mt. Hardware.

Six NorCal fly shops have closed their doors since Dec 2007. That's around 25% of NorCal fly shops. Makes you wonder what the final tally will be in 2008. Looks like the local fly shop is going to be a thing of the past. What a shame.

yeah, it appears to be a tough line of business at the moment... I know the shop in Auburn closed recently and have heard that others are closing too... luckily the Off the Hook fly shop in Placerville is still around, Kiene's seems to be going strong. The Fly Shop seems to be doing as well as ever... Ted Fay's is around in their new location... there are still shops out there... what shops do folks go to?

Found out yesterday when I was returning my skis at Tahoe Dave's. Definitely sucks. I always did my shopping there during our Truckee trips.

My local shop is Creative Sports in Pleasant Hill. It appears to be doing OK, but this line of business is tough with all the competition from Cabelas and others. I second the call to support your local fly shop

We are a declining demographic... that is part of the problem. Fewer licenses are getting sold these days despite a growing population. The problem there is that if folks don't experience a thing they don't care about it. It is a bit of an irony of the "green revolution" that appears to be going on... we have more people that are looking to be "green" but they know less about nature, don't have personal experiences with nature, don't see when harm is done, don't experience the loss of wilderness first hand.

C'est la vie, I guess.

I have three shops to choose from... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
all within a 5 mile radius..

Maybe it makes sense to put fly shops in areas that actually have fishing???

Well Carpy, I'd say there is a bit of fishing around Truckee, no?

It doesn't seem to be the urban shops that are closing, but the shops in smaller markets... or at least that is what it looks like to me, maybe that's not true.

ya, that there is , but where do the fly fishermen come from..? Bay area?

Why would a bay area shop open a shop in Chico?
